Hey everyone, im curious how y’all would ago about this kind of a motor swap.
i want to swap my 351w for a 7.3 idiT.
Considering the differences in motor mounts, wiring and various other odds and ends:
would it be easier to swap cabs and beds or to swap the powertrain over?
im thinking if I can leave the wheel well liners in place I can leave most of the stuff hooked up and just swap the dashes out.
just a footnote; I have thought about replacing my truck, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. i know the ins and out of what its been through so there aren’t any surprises waiting someone buried.
i want to comfortably tow a small toyhauler for the wife and I, and get decent fuel mileage unloaded.
Find a parts truck that is OBS. I converted my '91 Bronco to IDI and it was not that hard. I did not swap the whole dash, just the harness that goes behind it and the instrument cluster.

I suppose I should have been more specific, oops! yes its just the wiring and instrument cluster.
What was and wasn’t plug and play? Mostly accessories like AC, vacuum lines, and getting it all setup right. I would like to get my cruise control and horn working again too.
im less worries about motor/trans and axles as I want to build it, see if a zf-6 and superduty axles will work as well.
The zf6 doesn't fit our trucks very well, theres no real advantage over a zf5. Same final gearing.
The axles aren't too hard unless you're wanting to go coilover up front. If you have a complete donor truck its alot easier.
Why the idi and not a powerstroke?
as for IDI V. Powerstroke, it comes down to price, and general want. Im an opportunistic fellow so it could happen, so could a cummins too. i like the PSD, but its so frickin expensive comparatively in terms of the donor, parts, and dealing with electronics. I know the IDI’s issues, and its not perfect nor an end all be all but it can make plenty of power for my needs and be fun. Besides, mechanical injection sounds fun, im slowly getting into carbs and im enjoying it (until I confuse myself)
the ZF6, its final gearing is .72 v. .77 (zf5 close ratio for diesel). I can see it being a hard fit though but any extra gearing when pulling hills is nice. If I do this up how I want, a 3.73 rar instead of 4.10’s and a lower final gear should help fuel econ. .

All that stuff worked on mine and it was all pretty much plug and play as far as electrics are concerned. The reason I said get an OBS parts truck is that the plugs are different from the earlier years so you want as much plug matchup as you can get. My Bronco was a '91 and my parts truck was an '89. Use the underhood harness from the donor truck as well.
I had to get a regular (non-EFI) fuel pickup for the tank and then run a new line up to the front for fuel. I added an electric lift pump under the hood as I did not trust the mechanical lift pump. I had to use the motor mount perches from the donor truck and weld them to my frame. That was about it as far as special mods.
Oh yeah you will need to put the diesel springs under your front end.

Good to know!
Knowing that ill need to mod the fuel tank, I might just switch the back to a 38 gallon tank, maybe a 38 in front too and make the back a feeder if that’s possible.
