Hi, since few weeks my steering is hard to turn but it's unequally (it turn sqare when it does) so i think it's the universal joint. At napa it cost 350$ cdn for the join but i found this on Rockauto. But it seem in plastic ? Can I have your recommendations ? Should I replace the intermediate shaft assembly ? Note I had a loose in the steering and it may (or may not) come from there as all the front has been done.
An acceptable Ford OEM part number search finds one for dirt cheap: Steering U-Joint I'm not what condition this is in and whether the seller would ship into Canada---since you don't list your location I'm assuming you're up north since the NAPA link seems to direct me to a Canadian site. Here's another, same situation as above: 2nd Steering U-Joint; that seller does seem to ship to Canada.
You can lift the front wheels off the ground supporting the frame with jack stands and turn the steering wheel to check if the u-joint is the problem. Have a helper turn the wheel while you observe the joint.
If it turns out that is the problem and you need help shipping from the USA into Canada I'd be glad to help--have done it a few times already for other members having difficulty sourcing parts. Leave a message on my Visitors Page and we'll communicate in some way.
So the problem was it.. but I'm working hard to find the ford part as Dorman dont even make it. The part is not the same for strippe chassis than full xlt van. Weird...
Late to the party........but quick question to @cormierjimmy, When turning the steering wheel......does it like "bind" up and turn real hard? can you turn the steering wheel full right and left "freely" or does it "catch" in spots??
Reason.......bearing in the steering column will cause this, and the only solution is to re-build the steering column. Many posts on here for rebuilding info.
Put you hands on the top and bottom of the steering wheel, and if it moves up and down.......bad column bearing.
annaleigh ( The U-joints are Not replaceable on the Ford (and Jeep) interment steering shaft, only the whole shaft with both U-joints, and mostly a junk yard part (been there, done that)
JWA.......Yea, I stumble in there every once in a while...........
Thank you guys, I will need to replace it, Junk yard may be a good idea for now. There is the part I've ordered but for a stripped chassis, quite different and Dorman don't make it for a Full van. I've try to make it move but it's really stuck. Quebec winter is hard on it.
