Are the steering shafts on 80-88 f150s interchangeable? If not, what are the differences?
I've got a 88 f150 4x4 and the steering shaft is worn at the slip joint on the shaft. No, its not the gearbox. I can move the steering wheel by grabing the top half of the shaft and can rotate the steering wheel about 2 inches. It makes my truck, act like the ball joints are going out, wandering, and not suited to my driving style.
I can get plenty of pre 86 steering shafts, but the junkyard in my area is fresh out of 87-up steering shafts.
Thanks steve83, thats just what I needed to know. I did call the dealer about the shaft bushing, it is discontinued. I will just grab the '86 steering shaft from the junkyard tonight.
I'd recommend you stay with '87-91 for the MUCH improved solid-rubber rag joint, and the better u-joint at the top. I've bought them for as little as $10, but $30 is a fair price for one in decent shape.
