When I was pulling my lower Intake manifold to replace it I pulled my distributor without marking it , I have everything back together now and need to time the truck. Rather than go into every way I have tried so far, I guess the easiest thing is to just tell me the proper way to get this truck to run so I can time it. Backfiring and trying to start is going on now with a little running terrible for a few seconds. Anyway, my question is exactly what should I do to set the distributor properly to get it running so I can put my timing light which I know how to use on it and get it to 10* BTDC. Any help will always be appreciated. Thanks Sandy
Well, I'd pull the distributor and turn the crank by hand till the 10 degree mark lined up and then stab in the distributor. There is a 50/50 chance you get it right the first time. If it doesnt just drop in because of the oil pump rod, just jump the solenoid and bump the engine around while pushing on the distributor. Should fall in at some point.
First step is to bring piston #1 to TDC on the compression stroke
Then stab the dizzy so the rotor points at #1 post on the cap when fully inserted, body of distributor should be clocked at about 5 o-clock.
Now start the motor and set timing with the light.
If its something simple, trust me, we have all been there.
One of the best bonehead moments for me.
1. Load racecar on trailer
2. Load tools
3. Load extra e85
4. Load laptop and data logging equipment
5. Drive 2 hours to the track
Get to track
1 unload tools
2 unload car
3. Jack up car and remove street tires
4. Get slicks from trailer..
5. Look in truck bed for slicks
6. Ask buddy where he loaded the slicks
7. Get told " I thought you loaded them"
8. Put street tires back on and play the pedal game for a few passed before giving up and going home
Man that was a real pisser for you. No excuses on the one today other than the 110* heat IN THE GARAGE. The distributor was the last thing to do in the reinstall and then timed. By then I think I was fried.
and it all started with a broke bolt, good grief, is murphy paying rent? glad you got it!
Its like it always is. "No good deed goes unpunished" Really want to take care of the truck so I decide to do a complete coolant flush and new thermostat and gasket. Over tighten one bolt and "the monkeys dead and the show is over" Never fails.
