Ive never been to Truck Stock before but Lynden KOA looks like an interesting place to hold Truck Stock 2021 and its only 3310 miles from my home. I can see it now... we can sit around the evening camp fire and get a tutorial on how to do cool paint jobs.
Progress on Effay has slowed down a bit lately. I've been focusing on a few mechanical items, hoses, belts, tranny filter, that sort of thing. Afterall, this truck has been sitting for a VERY long time, and I would rather not be sitting on the shoulder somewhere, because I chumped out on a fan belt. As with any older build, getting fasteners loose is always a challenge. You can see the degree of rust and corrosion. Early on in the process, the radiator showed that it was fragile, so I chose to have that re-cored. It's in the rad shop now. The distributor has been stuck in the motor, since the day I got it out of storage. I've been religously spraying it down with break away and PB blaster for months, but it never wanted to let go. I have been dreading the day that I would really have to get aggressive, but that day had come. Therefore, I handed it off to another guy....haha. It sounds like it put up a really good fight, but it eventually came out in a couple pieces. While the truck was being worked on, I figured this was a perfect time to install a little rumpity rump. So, I ordered up a cam kit, comeplete with spings, lifters, timing gear and seals. It's going in now. Things under the hood closely resemble artifacts from the Titanic, as you can see in this pic. I am by no means going to polish it up like a diamond, but I figure it can't look like an old rat rod under the hood. I have bead blasted the intake, re-routed a few items, tidied it up a little here and there. It should at least be presentable now. I will post a couple after pics, once I make a little more progress.
On a sour note, I am at odds on what to do with the transmission. When the pan was dropped, to replace the filter, it looked a little sludgey in there. I also found the remnants of a tiny clip. I'm not sure where that came from, but I imagine it will eventually be the equivalent of a pulling a pin on a hand grenade. I could probably just run it until it didn't work any longer, but here is my challenge. The cam selection I made will most definitely want some stall. I can easily throw one in there, but of course that's going to be 300-500 bucks, and I am not sure how the questionable tranny internals would affect the convertor. I would hate to throw good money after bad. Ultimately, I think this C-6 needs to have another gear, to help offset the 4.10 R&P. I have tossed around the idea of swapping in an AOD or perhaps finding a gear vendors overdrive. I would love some input on this. TIA
Wow, Ive been fond of the truck since the paint job happened, but I'm even more into it now, knowing it has the 385 family for an engine. You should go to truck Stock 2021, you could line it up with Gicknordon and lay down some rubber for entertainment. Heck I might even make the trip if that was a possibility.

Ya, and oddly enough it has been in the truck since 1971. My Dad bought a totaled Galaxy LTD, that only had 180 miles. The truck has the motor, C-6, the steering column, the hanging brake pedal assembly, and it used to have the rear diff, from that donor car. Kind of a cool history, I think. I don't have any plans to make it go-fast, but it started life as a 10.5:1 motor with D0ve C heads, and it now has a Performer intake, electronic ignition , a better carb and a relatively healthy cam. I will try to squeeze headers into the mix, but my steering column location might say otherwise. Regardless, I am assuming it should be roughly 400ish hp and somewhere in the upper upper 4's to lower 500's lbs./ft of torque. It may not run in the 10's, but I am hoping the burnouts will look like it does!....haha
Dunno what kinda numbers your looking for in terms of gas mileage and/or cruising rpm's, but i think you're correct in going with the aod or gear vendor. I have a c6 with a TCI 12" 2000 stall torque converter mounted up to my 302 and I am no where near the numbers your putting out (293 hp/254 lbs torque). WIth that said, I'm running a 27.25" tire and 3.00 gear, cruising at 75 mph's I'm at 3000 rpms. With the low stall and tall gears in my set up, I'm not able to break the tires loose at all, even when I foot brake it. After consulting with several of the members here, it looks like swapping the rear gears and adding an overdrive (aod or gear vendor) will be the next to do project for me. Anyways, hope this helps ya.
I whole heartedly agree, having one more gear would be ideal. It's just the cost at this point that has me holding back. I jumped in quick on this project, and unfortunately my "allowance" is dwindling fast...haha
So..... Whats going on with the motor detail and transmission repair ? Hopefully it's all done and you're racking up some miles.
No,
Sadly I ran into a major hiccup. To play it safe, the motor came out, and we found a toasted main bearing and a broken piston skirt. So, off to the machine shop. I guess on a good note, the motor will be somewhat fresh, when it goes back in. It is also giving me the opportunity, (and a little motivation) to go a little deeper on cleaning up the engine bay.
As of yesterday, I have welded up 35 holes in the inner fenders and firewall. I still have a ways to go. Man, it was UGLY in there! Now, I don't plan to get carried away, but a major cleanup is definitely in order, before putting the motor back in.
I also gutted all the old mess of wiring out. I planned on a re-wire next fall, but it was super sketchy and it was looking me right in the face, so.... I am in the starting stages of installing an EZ Wire kit.
I am torn between colors for the engine bay, and I would love some input. Initially, I was just going to hit it with some satin black single stage. Now, I am wondering if satin Red might look better. I'm still on the fence for motor color. Any suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks
Here is what it looked like when the motor came out.....uggg....gross!
