Bed back on, to check all my clearance. You can see where I plasma cut out the bed sides. This rough cut will be enlarged later. To get the truck to sit how I want, with the tire size I want, I will possibly have to raise the fenders. More on that later...
Again, nothing new or fancy happening here. I bought a set of $47 trailer fenders, that I will modify for my inner wheel tubs.
First thing, cut them apart.
Next thing, measure and slice them apart.
Next, trim and grind, and tack them back together. I ended up making mine 4.25" which placed them right in between my shocks and where my tire "should" reside. They will get final welded and installed later. I am still on the fence on wether to plug weld them on, or simply bolt them on.
Here they are in place. Final trimming will come before they are installed. They are sitting really high in the photo.
Here you can see the rough tire placement, as well as a spot I am considering for battery location. At this point, I think I might be ordering up a set 325/35/20 for the final tire size! To be safe, I will order wheels and make sure my offsets work out accordingly first. Keeping those fingers crossed!
I'll have wheels soon, but the beauty rings showed up quick! ...So, It's arts and crafts time in the shop. With a little construction paper, This is a loose interpretation of the look I am going for.
Finally getting to burn the cardboard mockup wheels, and replace them with real steel. I purchased a set of 20x9 and 20x11 US Ratrod wheels, with the optional Baby moon center caps. I fitted a 255/35/20 up front, with a 315/35/20 in the rear. Originally, I wanted to go with Mobsteel wheels, as I wasn't sure I liked the larger diameter of US wheels baby moon, but due to all of this covid stuff, they are extremely backed up on orders, and I simply did not want to wait for 3-4 months to recieve my wheels. I did order Mobsteel beauty rings, in hopes that they would work, and I was lucky enough that they did. The rears did take some minor negotiating to get them to fit, but everything looks great. I'm defintely not comitted to the color I chose, but that can be addressed any time.
This week, I was able to relocate the electric fuel pump, to the rear of the truck, along with running new hardlines, the fuel system is in place. the only thing left on the table is how I will deal with the filler neck. My initial thoughts are to modify a stock mustang filler, to exit the very rear of the truck, just below my raised bedframe. I will need to fabricate a sheetmetal filler piece anyway, to close up the gap I will have from raising the bed floor. Putting the filler neck in that panel will mean the tailgate will need to be opened to fuel up, but with the tailgate closed everything will be hidden beneath the wood bed. Another option would be to put the filler in the wood floor, which is the most common approach, but I kind of like the idea of keeping it completely hidden, as I am going to try to retain as much of the "old truck" looks as possible. The only real exception neing the big wheels and lowered stance. Pics to follow...
Nice job SHMO! Those wheels with the baby moons are a real eye catcher.... those FORD caps would be even better, IMO. Awesome job on the rear end fabrication too.
