Our truck is a '17 SCREW with max trailer tow package.
We tow a 5,000 pound cargo trailer (including payload) twice a year - 1800 miles round trip. 400- 500 lb tongue weight Other than the towing we do, the truck is pretty much used a car - don't haul much of anything.
Probably not possible, but I would like to soften the ride when the truck is empty.
You will get a better ride if you go with a 60 series sidewall. 275/55/20s don't ride the best and that is probably one of the reasons Ford is moving to a 275/60R20 in 2021.
It is funny how ride is such a subjective thing. I just replace the factory shocks with Bilstein 5100's on my current truck. I always go with the 4600's but this time I got a nice deal in the the 5100's so I thought I would give them a try. Bilstein shocks don't bounce as much as the factory shocks and are probably a little stiffer when you hit pot holes or go over rough tracks. If you drive over roads that are rough you might think the Bilstein’s ride better since you won't bounce around as much. If you really want a better ride I agree with JKBrad, tires are probably the best way to go. The GoodYear Wranger SR/A tires are fairly soft tire that will absorb some shock before it hits your suspension, a Michelin LTX M/S2 is a firm tire that will transfer everything up to your suspension. What tires are on your truck now?
On my last 2 trucks, both Super Dutys I upgraded shocks to Rancho adjustables (2002 SRW) and Bilstein 5100 (2006 DRW). I had great results with both.
On my current 2015 F150 I bought 15 months ago I was suprised by the rear wheel hop on my local freeway overpass. It is a slight bump around a corner and pulled an oh $&@“ the first time I hit it. Felt like I was gonna hop sideways going 60.
I played with the air in my tires with a little success and then bought Bilstein 5100’s like my last truck.
Honestly, not a big help in my situation. I think it’s my E rated tires more than anything. They are 17X33 so lot’s of meat. I have them at 36 PSI now.
I would love to try the Ranchos again and try them on 1. They were good shocks years ago, hated adjusting them though. Hard to get at the *****, can’t read the numbers on them, and they lock up, ride nice though.
