Hi, I have a 1979 F150, and I went to open the door, and both pins holding the exterior handle in place broke off. Does anyone know what these bolts/pins are called, and where I can find them? Thanks
Some door handles seem to have giant pop rivets holding the door handle on, my 79 does. The aftermarket replacement handles have flat head bolts welded on the the handle & are retained by nuts on the inside of the door. The handles fit may Ford vehicles, so you may even be able to find a replacement handle at the parts store..
I have seen OEM handles have giant pop rivets. A PITA to remove to replace a broken handle, so consider yourself lucky they broke. Also yes a replacement handle (like stated above) has a flat head style bolt tack welded in place and the nuts go on the back. Also have a black plastic cover over the flat head.
Might hit up Lowe's hdwr dept and look for some special automotive fasteners. Or the HELP section at a local auto part house. Here is what is looks like in there when I had a piece on the side of my handle break and had to replace the whole thing. Be careful removing the door panel. I broke one attachment bolt/nut off on the old handle. So no matter. Also lube your window track since you are right there. And GM pins (for the door panels) are longer than Ford ones.
