Inside Door Handle

What is the secret to the interior door handle rod hitting the door handle release to open the door. I have installed new handles that are shiny and unpitted and there is an issue with them opening the door. PO had added a piece of thick wire looped to extend and prevent this. Why is this an issue???

Upper pic, caption should read 1968/72, because only the 1967's are unique.

They can be a bear. The tang or lever that extrudes from the door handle goes under the door opener. Almost every time I mess with them I have to keep messing with them. There should be a plate that goes on the door, them the metal door panel and then the door handle/opener. I think at one point I loosened the nuts and giggled it about and it kind of seemed to fall into place. I did the same on the other door and had good results. I don’t know what it was, maybe the door gods were smiling on me.

OK TeachNlive4ever, that is the answer I was looking for. Thanks. I guess the only mistake I made, I jiggled the handle instead of giggling it. Not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I do not have the plate on either side.

Seems this is not included on LMC's site. Will have to check others.

219A59 is almost like spacer or shim. Maybe try some washers?
Giggle is a VERY important step as it aids in the prevention of flying tools. I guess you could try jiggling....

Not all 68-72 had the 22634, the deco plastic chingadera. I know you’ve never heard this before, but it could be going too deep.

I goofed in the other direction. Adding sound-proofing, I made it too thick, and had a devil of a time getting it thin enough to open the door. Made for at least one creeped-out date situation! If it was pulled too hard, it would click-over the correct point, and stick in the 'pulled' position. Then the door had to be opened from the outside. (No reference there to the date situation...)

Hmmm, thanks 72-34ton. With the cold weather coming in, I may have to work on my doors so she can’t escape....

We put our sound deadner on the door skin and 6 mil plastic taped to the inner door panel. I’ll have to change that for a little “Brown Chicken Brown Cow”. ( I crack me up)
