Starter for 1951 Ford 226 - Generator
Hi I have a Korean war genset with a '51 Ford Industrial 226 that has been in service at my place for a while and I've rebuilt the starter a few times without issue. During this past hurricane, the bendix jammed up and now I'm struggling with finding either a suitable replacement bendix or replacement unit. The nose of the starter is stamped with 8RNN-11131 and there are no other markings on it to help me out. The parts I've bought thus far a Ford 226 Starter are:
- Brushes and Spring - good fitment and performance
- Bendix spring - no fitment at all
Can anyone help me identify what application this starter may be from or any suitable replacement. Its a t has a 2-bolt starter with a flange that has a 3" hole and 3.5" c-c bolt holes for mounting. The starter is mounted on the exhaust side with a exhaust down pipe that limits the available clearance. Imagine the bolt holes being at 1:30 and 6:30. The Flange-to-Flywheel depth is 1.25"
I do appreciate the help,

With the 8nn prefix, sounds like it's from a ford 8n tractor. Mounts the same...The correct one, though yours may be a good replacement has one tooth more or is it one tooth less on the bendix than the more popular V8.. This mates to the special ring gear ford used on their six. There is a guy with a business and a website who specializes in starters and ring gears. He reproduces the six cylinder ring gear that has been obsolete for years.. His name is Al Surrhing or something like that. Maybe Suhering. He will have the info you need.

UPDATE: I think this starter is using a 10 tooth Bendix that might be found on a Ford flat head 239 v8. Does anyone know where I can find a bendix that looks like the one in my pics that would be 10 tooth?.
Mr. Google is not much help.
Any ideas would be appreciated,
Thanks, -Carey

I've been advised by an old Parts Guru that since this may have been a military spec'd generator, they wanted a starter with a nose since the Ford starters were prone to failures because the end of the starter shaft is not supported. Since the starter must turn the Ford 226 and a 30 KW generator and exciter that a standard Ford starter may not cut it. He did say that it looks a lot like a Dodge/Prestolite MCH6101 / MCH 6201 so if anyone can check the specs against my measurements that would be greatly appreciated. Additional info: overall starter length ~12 1/2"
Thanks for any help provided,

I know I'm late to the game, but the 8RNN prefix is not for N tractors as previously suggested above.
The 8RNN part number prefix belongs to a Ford Power Unit Engine.
If @ckiernan001 has a correct identification on the motor, it is the 7HNN 6 Cylinder 226 Engine. The 7HNN engine used the 8RNN-11001 starter motor assembly. Cross reference part numbers for the whole starter assembly include B9J-11001-C and FAB-11001-C. It seems that the Wilson 91-02-5854 starter is a very close cousin, being the next evolution of your starter, differing only in interface in the nose (having three mounting points and clocking from your 8RNN-11131 nose) and used in the next generation of 6V Ford industrial engines. I would expect there is a very high probability that you could swap your nose over to the Wilson and have essentially a completely new unit.
Looking just at the starter drive, I believe, yours is Ford Part 8RNN-11350. Extrapolating on the Wilson starter, the drive is listed as Wilson 61-08-4410. This drive crosses with the following, but with the armature part changing between these generations, I'm not sure this later drive will mount/fit on your existing armature, and there is the question of tooth count as well:
