I worked on a customer's truck today with a mystery oil leak. After cleaning the engine for several hours so I could find the leak quickly, I discovered it was the HPOP reservoir to front cover gasket. Have you looked along the bottom of the HPOP reservoir on the valley side?
Alright guys... bit the bullet and dropped it off for a diagnostic test at a local diesel shop today. They found the HPOP (they called it the injection pump) was leaking oil and needed to be replaced. So... being that I have been working 7 days a week with no days off, I paid the $1,300 for them to replace it with a new Ford HPOP kit. It also needed two new batteries since the cells were dead in both (pretty bad corrosion on them) so they replaced both with motorcraft batteries with a great warranty for $350. All together it was a $1,800 trip to the shop but hopefully when I pick it up tomorrow, its all good.
They said I needed a new caliper because one blew and all of my fluid leaked out of it, along with some new pads and rotors but instead of paying them $1,200 to do that, I can tackle it in a few hours down the road lol.
I'll let you guys know how it runs when I pick her up.
To get rid of my 7.3 before the injectors go and put a down payment on a 6.7L? Haha alllll jokes aside. I probably could’ve done it on my own, and probably should’ve. But after a month of messing with it and throwing money at parts that wasn’t the fix, I threw in the towel. First time in 6 years of owning the truck so I’d say I’m in good shape! 😂

Every time something happens to my 7.3L and I have a passing thought of changing it out, I just remember what it is like to have a car payment. Then, I realize that even a cheap 6.7L in good condition is $50,000. So, consider that even if you were going to pay $1000 for a repair, that doesn't cover even 1 month "rent" to drive a truck around that belongs to your financial institution.
Also, the 6.7L is NOT immune from problems. Drop by YouTube or the 6.7L sub-forum here from time to time and see for yourself.
These 7.3L trucks can be a real bitch sometimes, but at least we can work on them ourselves and there isn't some 24 year old "diesel mechanic" in a Ford shirt plugging it into a laptop and charging you $150 an hour labor to throw parts at it.
HERE'S HOW I FOUND MY PHANTOM LEAK
Clean the valley, HPOP, oil lines and pedestal with break cleaner ... Spotless.
Wrap each HPOP head fitting with a clean paper towel, place another under the HPOP, wrap another around the HPOP line fittings and place another near the turbo pedestal.
After each test drive check all the paper towels. You'll find the leak quickly.
If all the paper towels have oil you got problems LoL
My phantom oil leak was the passenger HPOP oil line fitting at the pump. It was filling the valley each drive.
