Alright guys still messing with the 03 7.3 after she broke down a few weeks ago. Long story short, lost power while driving, started spitting oil, then died. Wouldn’t start afterwards so go towed home.
Once I got home, filled up with oil, tried starting and it wouldn’t fire.
Thought it was the IPR so changed that. It started up and ran rough, then I shut it off to try to start it again and while cranking it, I heard a loud pop... great.
Inspected everything and saw I blew a hole in one of my HPOP lines.
Changed all of the hpop lines, filled reservoir, tried starting it and it just won’t start.
Since I heard it takes while to get the air out, I cleaned the valley that was full of oil and have been attempting to start it.
Checked the valley after attempting to start it 5-6 times and it’s FLOODED with oil. I can’t figure out where it’s coming from.
- IPR is new and tin nut is tight
- New HPOP hoses and connections are tight
- New CPS
- Replaced one of the HPOP bolts with a new Oring about 6-8 months ago (not the non serviceable)
Any ideas? I’m so stumped and probably too stubborn to spend money to take it to a shop lol. Wanted to fix it on my own time.
If the leak is that bad you probably need someone to turn the key while you look for the leak as it should be pretty visible. One of the stc fittings on the hpop lines may not be seated all the way in...
The HPO line fitting gets my vote. When I replaced dads lines 1 of the fittings would not connect but it would blow off when trying to start. The fitting itself went bad once it had been disconnected. Actually had 2 of them no good by the time we did both lines. Rebuilt all the fittings and everything was fine.
It’s been a while but it looks like it takes 2 different kits for the pump side and the head side. You would need 2 of each to rebuild all 4 fittings. Guzzle’s site has a link to instructions.

I’m guessing you have a bad seal at one of the fittings.
Hey thanks for the reply. So when one of my lines blew, I bought all new lines and fittings from CNC Fabrications. I’ll have to have someone turn the key while I check I guess!

Well then it looks like you have that covered and can throw my thoughts out.
Sounds like you have a good plan for the next step. Good luck sir and let us know what you find.

I like those type hpop lines, maybe you forgot to tighten one of the jam nuts?? Let us know whatcha find, two people will probably be alot easier
I usually jump the starter solenoid when i'm trying to trouble shoot under the hood, makes it easier than hollering at my wife or daughter STOP STOP STOP.

If I remember correctly the 03 doesn't have a start solenoid it uses a relay.
Alright! So I found the leak lol... feel kinda dumb but it was the new HPOP fittings that screw into the heads. I thought they were right but somehow they got loose maybe when screwing the hose into the fittings.
Now my new problem.. how the hell do you get a wrench in there to tighten those fittings? Right now, the fitting on the drivers side head is facing a complete 180 from where it should be and I can’t turn it anymore. (The fitting needs to be facing the front towards the HPOP and it’s currently facing the Firewall).
You will need to losen the jam nut then turn the fitting towards the front( you may need to turn counter clockwise if already to tight), of the truck and re tighten the jam nut. The fitting itself does not need to be super tight since the jam nut and o ring are what seals the fitting. Do not want to over tighten the fitting or the jam nut but jam nut needs to be tight enough to seal the o ring . Hope that makes since, let us know how you make out
