There is a thermostat in the 5R110W transmission. It's nominal temperature is 165°F. That is the target temperature for this trans.
Anything as high as 220°F is normal. You can go as high as 250°F for no more than a half hour at a time.
If the trans gets too hot idle or fast idle in park or neutral to cool it off. DO NOT SHUT IT OFF IF IT IS OVERHEATED! That will cook the transmission.

Since I replaced the transmission, I have been watching the temperatures! I have been averaging around 165 F to 170 F under normal driving. Towing my 8k TT I have seen as high as 190 F. Before the stock trans went belly up, I never remember seeing that high towing.
