Recommended Temperature Range

What is the recommended temp range for an FE. I know most thermostats are start at 180 for the bottom, but what range would be normal for a hard working truck. Or, to put it another way, at what temp should you shut it down.

I can't see a reason for anything over 195-200 degrees on a hard pull. If you do then you need more cooling capacity.

I keep all my stuff under 190 degrees for the most part. It may heat soak after shutting down, but on average running, I keep 190 degrees

That's what I thought. In a conversation with Summit Racing about my setup they said 210 was within "normal".

Garbage Manufactured doesn't make their fans kick on till 210! Better for combustion, worse for engine life. Keep 'er around 190.

Many FE powered trucks (late 60's) came with a 160 stats from the factory, cylinder wear is higher at 160. At 180 you have reduced cylinder wear by quite a lot, at 195 a little less but then detonation problems with todays bad gas. At over 600K miles on rebuilds I see no problem with 180 stats with less detonation problems, your decision.
True modern engines run hotter like 205 degrees but then we're working with 45 year old design motors vs newer must meet smog requirements motors.
