What is the recommended temp range for an FE. I know most thermostats are start at 180 for the bottom, but what range would be normal for a hard working truck. Or, to put it another way, at what temp should you shut it down.
Many FE powered trucks (late 60's) came with a 160 stats from the factory, cylinder wear is higher at 160. At 180 you have reduced cylinder wear by quite a lot, at 195 a little less but then detonation problems with todays bad gas. At over 600K miles on rebuilds I see no problem with 180 stats with less detonation problems, your decision.
True modern engines run hotter like 205 degrees but then we're working with 45 year old design motors vs newer must meet smog requirements motors.
