I have a 2012 f250 6.7 4wd and 4wd will not engage..just makes sounds from transfer case motor then the dash lights up service 4x4..I've replaced the transfer case shift motor as well as the tccm module..dont know what else to swap out but the dash switch, which I ordered it too..I get out and manually lock the hubs and when I try to shift into 4hi it just makes sound and the dash says 4x4 shift in progress..after about 15 seconds the service 4x4 light comes on with wrench..can someone please tell me what in the heck it could be?
Is yours vacuum actuated like the early superduty's
Look for a disconnected line or a vaccum pump on the left side front fender under the hood, near the front of the truck
Pretty sure the truck doesn't know if the lockouts have engaged. It's merely looking for the 4wd shift fork to move enough to bump a plunger switch in the t-case itself. This engages your dash light. Or it may only be looking for a position sensor in the shift motor to know it's rotated far enough when shifting. Either way, it's completely electrical - not vacuum - that tells the truck it's in 4wd
If I were the OP I'd first remove the shift motor and make sure I could get it into 4hi manually. This would at least eliminate the possibility of internal problems preventing the shift motor from rotating enough. T-cases are inherently clunky and crude if you ever see the internals - it's a miracle a small electric motor can shift them reliably at all
Wwr that's what I assumed that it was electrical.when I switched out the transfer case shift motor it came with it in the 4hi position so I had to get a crescent wrench to turn the case into 4hi,and after I did I out the new motor on with the 3 bolts and turned the truck on and the dash said I was in 4hi..when I hit the switch on dash it switched back to 2wd and was back to not working at dollar all..I'm running out of electrical things to check.today I just changed out the auto lock hub solenoid on the coolant tank and still nothing..it just makes noises under from the case shift motor like it is engaging then disengaging..then service 4wd with wrench message comes on..
Yeah I just tried that and still nothing..it just does the same thing..I mean when i turn it to 4hi or from 2wd to 4lo it just sounds like a whole lot of shifting going on down there and nothing happens..except for the service 4x4 wrench light..surely it cant be the dash switch since it's getting power when I turn it.but I bought a new switch too just waiting on it to come in..I originally thought it was the control module because it says that module was for transfer case and differential locker on rear which wasnt working either..until I unplugged the back plug off differential then plugged it back in and now it is locking like it should..its just the 4wd will not engage..I can turn the front driveshaft with ease unless I get out and manually lock the front so I'm assuming it cant be the hubs either but I guess I could be wrong..its pretty much like you said making noises inside tcase like its trying..then just gives up after about 10 or so seconds..then I'll try it again and it does nothing..
I havent been driving down the road and tried to engage it yet,I know it says that's how the esof is supposed to work but shouldn't it also engage if I'm just at a standstill, with it in neutral,or 4hi while in drive?

My '08 would only drop out of 4hi if I was moving. If I stopped and tried to shift to 2hi it'd flash the light and eventually give up.
I can't recall EXACTLY what's lining up in there but it may help to have the input rotating when it's trying to slide that shift fork to engage the chain (and thus the front output)
Yeah I took it down the road and tried it around 10 mph up to 35 and still same old same..but like anything if I fool around with it long enough it will eventually get fixed..
Damn at this point I'd get medieval with wiring diagrams and see if each wire that starts and finishes the shift is getting whatever it needs to be getting. I know that's really vague but for me it'd just be hours with a multimeter, lots of cursing, several beers.
If you hold the motor and have someone shift does it move to the 4wd position and then think everything is good?
Pretty much tried all of the above lol except trying to switch it with extra person to see if it stays..but I do know when I turned it with the wrench it locked into 4hi and was showing on the dash to be in 4hi..but once i turned the switch back to 2wd and then wouldn't engage..I was messing with it some more tonight and noticed that the connector plug that connects to shift motor is not closing and snapping with other connector..so tomorrow I'm gonna check it out some more and see if maybe that has something to do with it..
So I just took the tcase shift motor out and switched it to 4hi and what it is doing is shifting to 4hi then going back to 2wd.this is what it is doing on old shift motor and new one..so what in the hell could it be?
I am surprised your having a problem, according to most people on this forum the electric shift never has problems, and the manual shift transfer cases are old and outdated.
