1988 F350 with 351W. Trying to determine why my check engine light is on. When I put jumper wire on EEC connector, the check engine light comes on with the ignition but does not flah any coedes. It just goes off and stays off. Any thoughts?
Ok, was able to retrieve codes this morning. Not sure if I was doing anything wrong the other day, but this morning jump wire was used to ground out EEC pigtail to frame. That worked. It surprised me that I didn't need the EEC connector, just the pigtail. Anyway, trying to diagnose a rough running, stall, sputter, white smoke issue. Codes were 22, 31, 51, 53, and 54. I suspected the TPS, and I think code 53 confirms that. Other codes may be related to the truck being de-smogged a few years ago. Thanks for the response!
All of the codes are because the voltage is off for them.
22 = MAP sensor
31 = EGR position sensor
51 = ECT sensor
53 = TP sensor
54 = ACT sensor
None of these codes have anything to do with the "truck being de-smogged".
You might check the supply voltage to all of them.
Also check the EEC Computer power and ground points.
No, I was jumping from STI to STO (4) and not applying any power other than what is activated by ignition switch. So I may have been doing wrong. My signal lights are screwy (a problem that existed prior to the current problem and I have suspected a ground issue. Based on subford's post, looks like I need to troubleshoot electrical issues and that may solve many problems.
