Check engine light doesn't work - and bucking , jerking
When i bought my 97 ford explorer i never noticed it but recently i noticed the check engine light doesn't come on. Normally when you start a vehicle it will flash, but during troubleshooting of bucking and jerking problem over 50 mph they disconnected air sensors which should have made the check engine light come on, which it didn't. I'm wondering if there was a problem with the vehicle and the dealer (used car dealer) disabled the light to cover up potential problem that i am experiencing now.
Ok two questions:
1. how can i hook the light back up or can I do it.
2. the bucking and jerking at speeds over 55
(We took it to tranny shop and they put it on computer and drove it. It bucked like we complained it did, but the computer said the tranny was in very good condition. They said it was possible ignition, so we took it to garage and they replaced plugs, wires, coil and after $500 it is still doing it.
It runs perfect but get over 55 with overdrive on or off it does it. Like i said we disconnected the air sensors to reset that. We unhooked the 4 x 4 . It is 1997 ford explorer XLT V6 Auto 4 x 4. Nothing has helped. We are in a bind.
Thanks,
Chad

Reason: added data
Take a look under the hood for a 4 wire connector with white/light green stripe & pink/light green stripe wires. The pink/light green is the wiring to the check engine light. See if it's been cut. Somehow i'm not able to find the exact location of this connector, but it appears to be about midway between headlight & firewall on drivers side. Also check under the dash on drivers side.
Should still be able to pull the trouble codes. What trouble codes have been pulled??? Not sure, but if the wire has'nt been cut i think no check engine light equals a problem with the PCM
Found it, that connector should be near the "battery/starter cable". BTW the other wire in that connector goes to the "tramission control indicator lamp" is that lamp working? I presume that light should also come on with engine off/key at run.
