engine Problems, bad running, with Vidoes, PLEASE HELP
The small metal tube at the back of the engine is indeed for the gearbox. With an automatic transmission there is sometimes a vacuum modulator that is connected to the intake manifold. I've never seen one connected to the carburetor, but as long as it's full vacuum I don't think that's a problem.
The dome next to it sticking out of the back of the manifold looks to be manifold vacuum port. Can be used for whatever is needed, depending on the size of the hose fitting.
I'm not really familiar with that type of fitting, but that's what it looks like to me.
The Carter 4bbl carburetor does use vacuum of a sort to open the secondary plate. It's a variable-venturi effect I think. The primaries are the ones under the choke plate, and the secondaries open mechanically with the throttle underneath, but only flow as much as as needed as the flapper valve you were showing opens up. Usually as engine speed increases, the plate opens up farther and farther.
It is fairly dirty underneath, but that does not necessarily cause a problem. Might clean it up a bit with some carburetor cleaner spray if you have access to that type of product.
Which distributor did you order?
