I have been having a problem with the truck "loading up" while driving off road and going kinda slow. also it will get a little hot. I went to get some wood and while driving off road i will have to put it in netural and rev it to blow it out. also the carb is only a 550 which i think might be a problem. Another problem is it seems to have a little backfire or miss when you get on it and its switching gears. i have a hole in a header tube but im not sure if that the problem or not.

Your Yota looks like a fun little rig, but I'd say you scored on that Highboy. Good lookin truck. Hope someone else will chime it to help you with the problems.

I wouldn't worry about the backfire. You're just reigniting unburnt fuel that's left the cylinder. Having an exhaust leak just makes it more noticeable because it's allowing oxygen in their to light it off again. Unless you're talking about a backfire loud enough to make someone hollar "incoming!" What engine and carb does it have?

It has the 390 in it with a 3speed. Its a good running truck sometimes but other times it runs like crap. I think it has a 550cfm carb on it but im not sure what kind. I was told that the carb was from the 80's and is one of those emissions carbs. Also would that have to do with it loading up? or is that just because it gets hot?

A 550 CFM carb isn't enough for a 390, especially since the 60's Fairlane GT's were fitted with triple carbs and setting track records. My guess is that a PO slapped a cheapo carb on there and maybe jetted it rich to compensate for not enough carb. I think maybe a 650-700 CFM Holley 4150 would be in the ballpark.

makes total sence. The truck does run rich and i bet that is the root of many of my problems. When i get a few extra dollars im gonna have to put a new carb and new headers on.

Also i really want to lift it another 4in. Is a highboy and a regular f250 lift kit the same. Where is the best place to get a lift kit? And i am not opposed to add a leaf kits or blocks.

No the highboys are different than a regular F.250. The highboy has narrower springs in the back. Cant remember about the front though.

Superlift and Skyjacker both offer a 4" lift kit, any higher than that and you're on your own (most guys opt for the '99-'04 super duty springs for lifts over 4").

What kind of carb is on there now? Post a pic of it if you can. I might be interested in it if it's a Holly 4 barrel.

Fairlane i will get a pic sometime this week for you. I get home from work when its dark and i go to work when its dark so i will try this week. Also i see that alot of guys used the superduty springs. Now are those the stock springs or the aftermarket lift kits for those trucks?

highboy lift

I have a '77 highboy, I lifted it an additional 3" to look good with 38.5" interco tires. I added 3" blocks to rear. For the front I added 2" tapered blocks (for better pinon angle) and a few leves. It's probably best to stay away from blocks in front though. This lift only cost me the price of new u-bolts (made at a tire shop with measurements I supplied), and shocks I have to yet purchase (my local auto parts can order them). It sounds like 68fairlane has your carb problem figured out. Oh yea, the highboys have narrow leves in rear (tall stack of them), and 3" wide leves in front (with 4 or 5 leaves on each side), as user "650" said. I'm pretty sure it will have to be ordered for a highboy, or up to early '77 f250, vrs the regular f250 of late '77-'79. Nice truck, really like the mirrors. I hope info is helpful.

Everyone here that knows always says never but NEVER use blocks in the front, very dangerous. The torque exerted on the front U bolts when the wheel is turned IIRC could cause them to break
