if the C6 torque converter bolted to the E40D flexplate, i think you are golden. if you look at the cast flywheel, there is no place to bolt the converter to. unless of course he used large washers behind the cast flywheel. that is the reason for that tin plate. it goes between the cast flywheel and the block so you have something to bolt the converter to.

That is correct. The six stud converters started with the 1995 Powerstroke. Diesel converters before 1995 had four studs.

About 2000 ft elevation in 10 miles and 3 miles of 55mph freeway. Loaded with wood, tools, tow a 10k trailer sometimes.... never need overdrive. Climb mostly in 2nd.

Last quote to rebuild this e4od was 2500 for stock build. No warranty because 4x4. 700 for c6.

looks like a c6 is pretty basic for a home build. Picked up an extra to have fun this winter. Possibly sooner!-)

Thanks Tom. Solid.
I know I didn’t take off the flywheel when the e4od came off. As long as the flexplate was there, its there.

if you do need to ever go back to the E40D, it is easy enough to do if you left the computer in the truck.
a powerstroke trans will work, you just have to use the IDI 4 bolt torque converter.
we put an IDI trans on a powerstroke two months ago. total cost was $325.
$175 for the converter, and $150 for the used trans from a junkyard.

Right., keeping the wiring harness for the next guy.

also picked up an e4od from guy who needed it out of his garage. It was a spare for his truck. 100$.
It’s a 97 that had a torque converter issue. T/C is gone. He also said the 96-97 e4od is beefier....?.
mostly picked it up for my buddy who owns a transmission shop and took the other e4od for trade.
there is 500$ core charge for these... here.

so this trans needs the 6 bolt t/c? In which case the flywheel will need to be 95-newer.
Or you are saying a 4 bolt t/c will work?

4 bolt converter for using it on an IDI, 6 bolt converter if it is going onto a powerstroke.
a reman converter is only $175

I know my converter is Gold and I know Ford Never painted converters so mine is not OEM.
All IDI diesels used a 4 stud converter. When the E4 was revised in 95, Ford changed to a 6 stud converter.

actually it was not 95, it was when the powerstroke was brought in in late year 94. IDI was 4 bolt converter, powerstroke uses 6 bolt converter.

94.5 PSD didn't have an E4 option. 95 was the first year for the PSD/E4 combo.

I don't Know who is making aftermarket 6 hole flex plates for the IDI anymore or if you can still find them, I know the PSD style don't fit IDI crank, mine was changed out back in 99 according to the Maintenance records.... it was done in Houston but I have no Idea what shop did the work as I didn't own the truck at that time.
I did change the engine in around 2005 still running the same E4OD

Actually it was 1995. The first E4OD Powerstroke was 1995. The first Powerstroke was 1994.5, but it was manual trans only.

no not 4X4... it was DRW when I got it but I converted to SRW and put a standard 8 foot bed on it ... it came from Houston Oil Field and had a Box on the back and I let them keep the Box.
it's also NA not turbo'ed

Oh. The 4 transmission shops I talked about rebuilding the e4od where all no warranty because of 4x4...
i run stock wheels/tires..no lift...look at me...not a 4x4 rock crawling mud bogger.... no warranty.
2500 bench build. 3500 remove/install.

so maybe the 4x4’s have a bad track record overall.
certainly...i dunno. seems like many, out here anyway, are dumping the truck with bad e4od or recently or new rebuilt and selling it.
and frankly I don’t care. Just stay away from them. 4x4 anyway. It’s just me. Bad mojo round em. Probably own one next year!-)

also, the torque converter/flywheel you have is a factor to consider. And how its driven/maintained.

Have an 85 f350 dually putting together and considering a us/gear vendor. Just for the 1/2 steps in the lower gears for climbing.
still researching it though. Any input is welcome.

thanks and
Best Regards to all for the help and support on my projects.
