I put my after market gauge sender in my coolant filter base. I disagree that a second gauge is redundant, the factory gauge is just a stepped switch. My aftermarket gauge is much more accurate and has alerted me to problems twice with thermostats. If you are running too cold you will never know it with the factory gauge.
I swapped the leaking water pump out for the filter integrated IH pumps one of my very first mods 6.5 years ago. I made the same mistake as 01 Excursion made... I neglected to paint the pump and since installing it, it has been several colors...
At least it is not a bright orange anymore like it was years ago and somewhat blends in behind the fan.
As for the coolant sensor, I would be looking at the plug location on the block. In my mind, that would keep the wire away from the quickly rotating parts on the front of the engine and allow for easier access for the install.
I very much wanted to use the international water pump on this truck (01). It has dual alternators though and apparently the IH pump will not fit a dual alt. truck.
The picture below is how I did the temp sensor and coolant filter line routing on my (00). I was just curious if there were better ways of installing the temp sensor. I may go this route on the 01. Not sure yet. If I do, I am going to route the filter hose differently. Not in love with how its between the pump and engine.
It never crossed my mind to paint it, dunno why, maybe cause the OE was aluminum, and I wasn't thinking about the new one being cast, even while leaning over the rad support, and grunting to install it. I should've stripped the oil coating and painted it. Next time I guess.

We look forward to what you decide.
The way I did it, that wire harness is as stiff as a board. Between the inner glue laced shrink tube, and the added plastic ribbed fastener secured to the harness, and the fastener pushed into the ALT bracket. It's not going anywhere. The key was to form the harness as the shrink tube w/glue cooled and set.
