First post here. I've been lurking as a guest for some time, but now I need some info that I cant find after a lot of searching.
My coolant temp gauge isn't working. I replaced the sensor and I tried grounding the sensor wire to the block to see if the gauge is working. When I turned the ignition on with the sensor wire grounded to the block the needle went all the way to hot so I know the gauge works fine. However after installing the new sensor and attaching the wire, the gauge doesn't move when I start the truck, not even after letting the truck idle for 10 minutes or so. I suspect that the ground associated with the coolant temp sensor is disconnected but I don't know where to look for it.
By grounding the wire, you checked all the wiring and the gauge. The sensor is grounded through the body of the sensor. You didn’t happen to overload the threads of the sensor with Teflon tape, did you?
The sensor came pre-tefloned, but that makes a lot of sense. I think I’m going to back the sensor out and see if I can scrape some of the Teflon off to complete the ground.
Yeah I bought the Motocraft sensor. You were correct, the teflon got in the way of the ground. I was able to get it off of there and the gauge works fine now. Thank you for the sage advice.
