which is which?

98 Ranger 2wd 2.5L 4-cyl M5od

i want to replace my temp sending unit and i know where it is. its right next engine coolant temp. sensor. i found the 2 sensors but which sensor is which? one has a brown connector and is front of the other.

Also, as far as troubleshooting a temp gauge reading incorrect, would it be safe to switch the connectors in order to check the temp gauge and associated wiring? i noticed that both connector are 2-pin connectors but i haven't looked too much past that.

Thanks for any help
Guy

Not too sure on your second part.

The sender for the gauge only has one wire, the sender for the powertrain control module has two wires.

The gauge reading "incorrect" really means nothing. None of the gauges are accurate to begin with.

What makes you think the gauge is going bad? A quick way to check the gauge is to ground out the sender wire. If the gauge spikes to it's max reading, the gauge is fine. Why do you think the sender is out?

What is the purpose of installing gauges if they are not accurate? Oh wait, nevermind, so Ford can make more money. Duh.. why didn't I think of that?

My truck has 2 sensors, both with 2 wires, one in front of the other, and they are part of the cooling system. Now I'm only assuming that one is a coolant temp sensor for the ECU and the other is the sending unit is for the temp gauge.

When i say the gauge is inaccurate what i mean is that the gauge reads cold (below the "Cold" line) after a 35 mile trip yet the A/C blows hot air. the Gauge used to display operating temp (the middle of the gauge's range) after only 3 miles of driving at the most.

The gauge is the factory gauge not aftermarket.

if the sensor connector has two pins can i jump the connector and get the same result as grounding a single wire sensor? Though i would still like to try switching the connectors if i can do so without causing any damage.

Thanks for reading, advice is welcomed

You need to verify that the sender is in fact malfunctioning (note.. these rarely go bad). Find someone with a scan tool able to read live data and while the vehicle is hot check to see what coolant temp the computer reports.. should be above 190f. I think you'll probably find that it's reading 165-175 and that your real problem is a thermostat either stuck open, or opening too soon.

Good luck.
