1964 F100 Build Thread

All,

Neophyte on the forum, but here goes. At the suggestion of skidoorulz I am starting a build thread for my 1964 F100. My father in law purchased the truck new in the fall of 1964 from Walton Motor Company in Cheyenne, WY. After being married to his daughter for 43 years he gave me the truck. Now eight years later I am retired and have started the rebuild. While I have some mechanical ability, sheet metal work is not one of my skills. About the only skill I have supplied so far is writing checks to my shop. I will start slowly with the pictures as I don't have very many from the shop yet. This is what it looked like in my driveway when I got it home.

I started with rebuilding the brakes and replacing the clutch. While driving the truck I could watch the road go by under me feet, so I knew it needed work. After finding a shop who would assist me the rebuild started. Once they got started we discovered the front cab supports were shot along with the gas tank mounts. We found a complete new floor pan on line. The shop drilled out the factory spot welds and the new floor pan fit perfectly. The cab corners were also toast so those were replaced.

I started out to fix the rusty sheet metal, but realized if we fixed everything and put it back together I would have to pay them to take it back apart for paint. So we expanded the project to be fixing all the sheet metal problems and repainting the truck. Once I get it home and recover from the collapse of my 401K I will try to do the mechanical rebuild. The truck is on its second or third engine, all of them were 292 engines. It runs fairly well but I suspect the distributor may need a rebuild. The tag on the transmission shows the 4 speed transmission was rebuilt in 1990. I had already had the seat rebuilt. When I got the truck the seat was a couch cushion stuffed into the seat springs, covered with a saddle blanket. I had also replaced the tires. It had three different sizes of tires. I am planning on replacing the wheels with new ones as I have had issues with bead sealing and the lug bolt holes are goose egged. I replaced the full wheel covers that were on it when I received it with stock innie hub caps, but will probably go back to the full wheel covers since I cannot find new innie wheels. More to follow.

Interestingly from your user name, my last job was deputy administrator for Wyoming State Parks. One of my programs was the Wyoming Trails Program, Snow and ORV.

If you were still doing that I would have a conversation with you about 14A and the spring Creek parking lot or the road up on the Lovell side of the Horns no longer being plowed consistently for sledder access on that side

Been gone for two years, so, sorry. If my fertile memory is correct reverse is far right and up. I also have a 96 Mustang Cobra with a five speed and it is different, far right and down.

If reverse is to the right and up that is probably the original trans. T98 was the 4 speed for that year that was optional. A 90's trans would not be right and up as far as I know. The trans will have T98 cast into it on the case.

I go to the shop every Tuesday to pay for the previous week's work and check their progress. Last week they were working on reassembling the the cab and finalizing the bed paint. The painter was touching up the FORD on the tailgate by hand. We went with a body colored bed liner for the cab and bed floor. You have to look closely to tell it is bed liner. They said maybe be done by the end of the month. I guess it isn't important since we are forecast snow for tonight and tomorrow.

They did a beautiful job prepping and painting. Looks great.

Out of curiosity, where did you find an entire floor pan? I was not aware anybody made one.
