Guys, I got a question for you. A friend of mine told me his trucks starter will not disengage, in gear, or not, even with the ignition off it still keeps spinning the engine. The battery has to be disconnected.
the truck is a 01 SD w/V-10. I’ve have yet to see this issue. Anyone have any suggestion?
First off starter has power to it all the time. If the solenoid on top of the starter stays stuck then wha la..starter will run all the time.
replace the solenoid on the starter. Basically pull the starter and bench test.
Disconnect the small wire from the starter relay to eliminate the ignition switch side of the circuit. If it still cranks continuously after that, it's either the stuck relay or stuck Bendix as already suggested. If it quits cranking with the small wire disconnected, then that starter relay trigger wire is shorted or connected to battery power at some point. Might be a stuck ignition switch or a short in the fusebox or wiring harness. I've seen rodent damage cause this particular issue where insulation was chewed off causing the short to power.
