I'm through debating this subject.
Wow. I think someone needs to change their tin foil hat........... There is/should be NOTHING political about this mess we are ALL in.

So you say there should be nothing political, and you add this comment. LOL.
Wake up and smell the hand sanitizer!
For instance, check the media. I understand how the media have their different slants and biases . We all do and accept from where the news is being broadcast.
But for the first time in years, we need the TRUTH from our media for the sake of safety.
One would think that they would set aside their slanted views and just honestly print the TRUTH.
Is that happening? Hell, no. It’s worse than ever!

So far as the media goes I pretty much subscribe to the theory that ignorance is bliss. I've watched the news on PBS during this fiasco but so far as the mainstream media goes I feel that I have enough common sense at my age to realize that the mainstream media are all there to support their agenda. Not saying that PBS is any better but I felt that I should try to keep up with the current mess somehow.

Exactly. You can’t lead with “nothing political” then drop your political opinion. Nobody who wins or loses an election has the lower to control what a virus does.

Anyway, politics are not usually allowed in threads but I’ll let the comments stand due to the nature of this thread. Let’s stop it though before it gets out of hand and a lot of people start firing off at each other. I don’t want to have to start deleting posts.

The interesting thing about a thread like this is you really get to see how some people really are.

As a resident of NYC who is also retired and has no problem with either shelter in place or social distancing I find the response to this crisis by our elected representatives (of both parties) amusing. The mayor of NYC and the governor of NY can't stand each other and they are both members of the same party. The mayor wouldn't close the schools. The governor finally had to do it. The mayor has set up a "Rat Out Your Neighbor" text line to report people who aren't social distancing. Certain groups of people are for the most part ignoring the restrictions on gatherings, social distancing and school closures but since they are politically powerful the politicians look the other way. Officials begged for help from the Federal Government. The Navy sent a hospital ship. The city and state had so many regulations concerning who could be transferred to the ship it went essentially unused and will soon be leaving. The city begged for N95 masks for health care providers. A number of groups stepped forward with NIOSH approved N95 respirators. Whoops! Sorry! We can't accept those. They have to be certified for medical use per CDC standards, which are 7 pages long.

At the federal level, one party seems mainly interested in assisting the Dow Jones while the other party seems more interested in pushing their social equality agenda. If somehow the little guy gets some help along the way; well, that's good too.

No politician has any experience dealing with something like this but they all see it as an opportunity to push their private agendas and score a "gotcha" against the other side.

Then there's the news media. Non stop gloom and doom. Now that they've run out of footage of body bags being loaded into trucks with forklifts on their way to burial in Potter's Field they have to find a new story line to whip up the hysteria. Apparently they've found one. On this morning's national news, the chief anchor hypocrite gleefully reported that with food processing plants around the country shutting down - and with accompanying stock footage of empty supermarket shelves - it won't be long before there are food shortages around the country. I guess tomorrow we'll see film of people lined up outside supermarkets panic buying anything that's left. A ratings bonanza!

Yep. Its a great show. Too bad so many people died needlessly in order to present it.

It’s sad how the 24 hour news networks are in a feeding frenzy. Life continues, there is a lot to still report on. As far as how the elected officials are acting, it’s ridiculous. I think they really believe that they have the power to stop a virus.

Pupnduck, it’s too bad that the private company you mentioned couldn’t distribute those masks and the city refused. It seems that they would rather avoid a lawsuit if someone who used one got sick rather than help a lot of people who would benefit from them.

I have all but stopped watching national coverage except 30 mins between local news in the evening. Every state and then city has different challenges to work through during this whole thing.
Luckily during all this crazy stuff I was able to continue working, actually quit my job of 12 years and took a better one! We are looking at re-opening restaurants, salons with limited capacity Friday 4/24.
With a total of 9 deaths and 329 cases for the state we're doing well. I know I've kept my sense of normalcy by going to work, the grocery store, lowes, napa..ect and getting a few extra projects done I'd been putting off.
I feel for the hard hit areas, but hopefully locally we can get back to a form of normal with precautions and education in place.

My state is in a dire situation with oil prices, tourism which are mostly what prop our economy up, they are trying to keep fishing going this year. The days ahead could be pretty dark as a whole given the economic gutting we're experiencing and going to see in the next few years.

You sir have hit the nail on the head. This is the most logical, well thought out, and accurate thing I have read, or heard anywhere, about this crisis. Thank you for your comment.

And, in the middle of all this COVID crisis, the one thing that you rarely of ever hear about is that the USPS is literally dangling by a thread. The PO needs a custom made stimulus of it's own in order to maintain operations and not have to completely close or furlough it's workforce by Sept. Sadly, there are people in DC who refuse to discuss the PO.

We will see how this all shakes out but I suppose the PO will become important once service has been interrupted or outright stopped.

The bigger picture here is how all this will affect the other ground shippers as they are all in this together contractually providing needed services for each other be it last mile delivery, air transportation or what have you.

To be honest, it was getting pretty gloomy around my house about a week ago.
Our kids were focused on corona virus and my wife was getting very stressed & out of sorts.
There was a toll on us from having the constant negative drip of the mainstream media that we left running on our tv.
We ended up turning off the news. We are getting our weather reports from our phone apps.
I still keep up with the news online using aggregators. The tv is only for shows and movies in our house for the time being.

Since doing that, things have improved significantly. The cloud has lifted.
To help a bit more, we're heading to the family ranch for a week to isolate there in the middle of nowhere...no internet, no screens.
Having a week of hiking, exploring, target shooting, playing games, and putting jigsaw puzzles together should be really good for us.
Plus, this will be a great opportunity to help the kids hone their safe gun handling skills. I also know we'll find some great sticks to whittle and a few geodes to break open, too.

Good for you. We don't own a TV. We get our news/weather from the phones or the laptops. I am also glad we are where we are so we don't have to put up with people.

This is our view from the back porch just outside the back door.

It's easy to be overloaded on information. It's really kind of sad to have to get far left and far right news from the media and then have to figure out where it meets in the middle. I just turn it off now and then. Please everybody research and take the time to read some things you don't agree with. I still don't agree with a lot of them but I try to remain open minded and attempt to educate this old man. Hope everybody stays safe. Regardless of which end you are coming from, we are all meeting in the middle somewhere in AMERICA.

It is alarming that the USPS doesn't seem to be a priority. I would think it is a matter of national security. My wife worked as a city letter carrier and it's a job a lot of people don't really appreciate. A lot of America depends on the USPS.
