So Im looking for some advice on what kind of long block to purchase to replace the original 302 in my 79 f100 custom with manual tranny. Not really looking for hp,but looking more for “everything bolts up as should”. I’m not a mechanic by trade but a machinist,so I understand mechanics to a degree. Any advice on what or who to stay away from or even what years will fit this truck and everything still bolts up as should would be great an highly appreciated.

1968 to 2001 will physically bolt in. 1986 they started fuel injection, but it is easily removable and a matter of swapping a carbureted intake onto it, and sometimes a distributor.
Now would be a good time to upgrade to a 351W as it is a bit more powerful and bolts in exactly the same as a 302 would.
Awesome info. I assume the original isn’t worth rebuilding .?i really don’t care for the two piece rear main seal.
Will the 351 bolt in for those same years?

Any 351W will fit.
Wether or not its worth rebuilding is your call. You won't find one with a 1 piece rear main until the fuel injected engines.

The 351W went to a one-piece rear main in 83, as did most everything else.

thanks for the info. I guess my issue with the 351 is finding all the power steering stuff alternator stuff etc. unless the 302 stuff is a direct bolt on.

Some of it works and some of it doesn't. your best bet is to find a 351 with all of it already on it, I think some of the brackets are longer due to the taller deck height.

Depends on what set up you use. If it is the non auto-tension serpentine system it fits both. Low mount Alts fit both. Other then the fore mentioned serpentine system none of the PS systems will fit both.
