A few years back I purchased a '63 F-100 and was told it had a rebuilt 302 with about 4,000 miles on it. Since then, I have pulled the engine to do other work, but am still curious to try and get a handle on the truth. I actually went to the rebuilder, but had no luck. I was told by the previous owner it was a 302 out of a '76 Granda. As time moved on and after a few broken promises, I don't believe anything I was told about the truck. Would any of you have any ideas as to how I would begin to piece together what I have. I don't even know if it is a 302. It could be a 289. It looks like a Ford "blue" painted engine, and is similar to colors the engine rebuilder used. But?????????????? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ThanksJL:-X12

The only sure way I know of to tell the difference between a 302 and a 289 is to cheack the stroke. If you can read the block casting number and the first two digits are C9 or start with D, then its probably a 302. I don't think they made the 289 after '68.
