Good morning all. Just curious as to how I find out which transmission I have in my 2000 F350 7.3. I'm going to attempt to change the atf here soon, but am not sure if I can, or should, use Mercon V fluid? Any advise on my transmission type and/or fluid type would be greatly appreciated.
Not a stupid question at all. The stupid question would have been "how do I get this fluid completely out of the transmission because it is the wrong fluid?"
If you have an automatic truck, you have the 4R100 transmission.
If you have a manual truck, you have the ZF6 transmission.

First, welcome to the FTE community dloomis. Second, there are no dumb questions ... just those not asked. Third, there is no such thing as just "Mercon" fluid anymore (nor has there been since about 2007. Our in house resident 4R100 expert, Mark Kovalsky, says use Mercon V with confidence. Search on his name for some great information.
Lastly, there may be additional fluid brands/specs that other FTE members can also recommend.
Thanks for the quick reply. I never found anything definitive on this up until know. And I agree that the "How do I..." question would have been worse. Thanks again.
A suggestion = get familiar with the FTE Tech Folder. Unbelievably handy information in there including a complete "how to change my transmission fluid" step-by-step procedural guide. Also, send some "reps" to Sous by clicking on the "scales" in the upper right hand corner of his reply. He's awesome and deserves every one he gets. In fact, anytime one of the FTE memers really helps you out, reward them with a "rep". Cheers.
It is generally agreed that we do not use additives with these trucks. Either in ATF or Oil. There are those who have tried, but after several years on this site, I haven't seen any serious benefits from there use...... It's like the eternal Oil Debate, Everybody has their secret sauce......
And has anyone here used the Hot Shots Secret TSE additive? Thoughts on it?
My thoughts are that almost every benefit they list will cause accelerated wear in the transmission. You would NEVER find this in one of my transmissions.
Any advise on my transmission type and/or fluid type would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
I bought my truck with 146K on the odometer (transmission was rebuilt or replaced at 120K according to OASIS). I don't know what was in the 4R100 when I bought it but I promptly switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (Mercon/Mercon V compliant) using Mark K's transmission flush procedure, replaced the filter, and put in a modified valvebody. My 4R100 was trouble-free for all 174K miles I had the truck. Some of it may have been my driving style and VB but I think the Mobil 1 definitely helped.
The only other maintenance I did on the transmission was another flush around 200K (with a filter change) then just drain the pan and fill up about every 30K miles after that.
