I use to run Lucas fuel injection cleaner in every other fill-up. More recently once Diesel Kleen when it got cold and before I found one battery with a dead cell. (Hard to Start). I choose stainless steel tubing and compression fitting because of galvanic action between two dissimilar metals in direct contact. I don't know if diesel fuel would amplify this action, or make it null and void. I do know that the tank will be clean after today. And with the little girl's help, maybe learn how to post videos on U-tube.
I wanted to let everyone know that I finished the Hutch and Harpoon Mod yesterday. We went to town for ice cream and I got fuel in two jugs, but was tried and waited till this morning to start the truck. It fired up the first try. I got several pictures, but the video we worked on is proving rather difficult. I might just leave that part to the pros. The truck does sound quieter, though I do not know why it would.
Am I the only one who keeps a book? 4 vehicles here, if I don't keep a book in each one I haven't a clue what's due. I make an entry any time I do anything and throw in a few notes as well like "fuel filter was black this time" or "added 1 qt of oil" etc.
I keep a record as well. Everything I do I write it down, with what it was, and the date, and mileage. I've been doing this for years on all my vehicles. I've actually been doing this type of maintenance record keeping since my first vehicle.
Wait there is a coolant filter on these trucks? Also I put all my maintenance in my phone (Samsung Notes).
The International pump has an integrated filter, but the OEM pump can have a kit installed from an aftermarket vendor to put a filter into the coolant system.
I thought I would throw this in the pile too. I changed my ICP, CPS, and EBPS the other night. For the last two days, I have very much enjoyed a much smoother idle and a fuel hand that appears to be dropping slower. All Motor Craft sensors from Riffraff.
I changed my CPS the other week, as I realized the one in the truck was like 10 years old.... I was shocked at how the rough idle smoothed out, although I was probably the only person to notice...
I keep a spreadsheet on everything I do to my vehicles. Also worked it around to changing at 5000 mile intervals, as its easier to remember to change it all when it hits 500,000 next time.
Just wanted to take the time and thank everyone for leaving their tips and advice. I recently bought my first diesel. It's a 2000 7.3 Excursion. its about to roll over to 320k miles. I do not know the history of this vehicle so i eventually want to hit all of the important maintenance areas of the motor and trans.
I plan on keeping up on the oil every 5k. So im considering going full synthetic high mileage or with whatever is highly recommend. I know the previous owner used Amisol non-synthetic every 5k. Also gonna replace the Oil Filter.
I haven't broke into the fuel bowl or filter yet, i'd eventually like to rebuild the bowl and replace the heater element and all o-rings. but this oil change im going to atleast replace the fuel filter for sure and check its condition for any tells. (black color, slime etc..)
I read some tips on the Coolant Maintenance here so i plan on flushing it, looking for leaks and replacing it with the recommended Peak Extended Life Coolant.
Truck did come with a cold air return with a riffraff cover. The filter is a little grey but i did take the air compressor to it and get some crud off.
The previous owner said the Trans was replaced 80k ago so i was debating on changing the fluid and filter on that also. I know the Trans on these Ex's go often and i want to stay on top of the Maint. on it.
My goal is to ensure reliability of my vehicle and to get to know it the best i can by doing the work myself. Also Considering replacing sensors and possibly rebuilding the high pressure oil cooler. The motor does have some oil on top and i want to make sure i can keep the leaks down and the motor clean and if it shows back up slowly use the process of elimination to figure it out and fix it. i know it wont be perfect but i also know these 7.3s will take care of you if you take care of them, and that gentlemen is my end goal.
Only Mods i know of is the cold air intake, and the 6 stage dial type tuner.(stays at+50hp)
I connected a bluetooth trouble code reader(OBD2) using torque pro and 2 of the codes i get im sure the result of the tuner, and the other 2 codes are for glow plug 1 and 7.
Any other tips, hints or direction given would be appreciated.
Sorry if this doesnt belong. hope its acceptable.
@Dequinex (John), welcome to the greatest 7.3L forum available to the free world.
The goals you have for your Excursion are right in line with each of our goals. We have a wide variety of personalities here on the FTE and sometimes they flare up a bit, but we usually come back to center and are always helpful in nature.
From a technical standpoint, I would invite you to check out the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder. Browse around, take notes and see what you are interested in learning about. Check out our random BS thread the Morning Coffee thread. Just talking about whatever and usually a good place to chat. Things are a bit tense right now due to the COVID-19 issues, but we still manage to keep our wits about us, most of the time...
A newly food thread known as Glutton Gulch was created the other day in order to share, inspire and create.
Welcome again sir and we are glad to have you with us!

Thank you for the warm welcome. I am glad to be here. and on a side note thank you for your service!
I will most certainly check out the Coffee and Gulch threads. and ill make sure to keep the Tech Folder open and ready to go during my endeavors.
I definitely have alot planned for this truck. After making it reliable of course.
Weather permitting, oil change will be this weekend!

Here's my advice. My truck has 335k on it. I have the radiator out for another part of a project....that being said as I grabbed it to re-install it I thought..."Hey, I should clean the cooling fins of the radiator with the garden hose before I put it back in."
I really didn't "look" dirty....but, the dirt and bug guts that got flushed out was enough to convince me that if I ever did a coolant flush....that would be a GREAT time to pull the radiator and give it a thorough cleaning.
