I had black filters like that when my injector o-rings gave up. I changed out injectors for upgraded single shots, and I've not had a black filter since. My stock injectors had 258k on them when I retired them and their 16 year old o-rings.
Oil in fue/‘black filter’ is almost impossible without regulated return or FRx.

So I too have black fuel filters, I changed them out at 15k and both so far have been like the one in OP's picture...
I don't have a regulated return or FRx...so what are the other causes? I've read algae but the filters don't appear very slimy/gunked up, or clogged...just black...
This would be an interesting investigation. Fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel tanks, fill-up locations, vehicle usage.... Lots of variables. From 1999 to 2003 surely something changed. But for now, there is no oil in my fuel and the filter is doing its job. I had plans for this weekend, but I'm going to do the Hutch and Harpoon. I'll do a video if someone will tell me why it is called Hutch and Harpoon.
Roger that. I've got 12" of 3/8" 304 stainless steel tubing and a 3/8" stainless steel compression coupling. I have 12" of 30r ( I think) fuel injection hose and the Wix 33972 filter. I found the water fuel separator I want, just not where to buy or how much yet. Its the Amsoil ADF-10. But the wix will be installed for now and in a manner that will be easy to change over. "Anything worth doing is worth doing at least twice." My little girl said she would help me do a maintenance video as a Christmas present. And I have been waiting for an excuse to buy a tubing bender. Here we go.
I think you’ll find the water separator unnecessary. You’ll be able to monitor the WIX 33972 filter and can see if you have any free water contamination in your fuel.
The factory filter does an amazing job of separating water before the fuel gets to the injectors. Supplementing it is unnecessary and ultimately just adds more potential points of failure. I prefer KISS method.
Am I the only one who keeps a book? 4 vehicles here, if I don't keep a book in each one I haven't a clue what's due. I make an entry any time I do anything and throw in a few notes as well like "fuel filter was black this time" or "added 1 qt of oil" etc.
Doing a Hutch and Harpoon tomorrow. I do not remember what thread it was in when SkySkiJason said that stainless steel was harder to bend after I said I had a piece of 304SS. I beg your pardon. It's not harder. It's HARD. PERIOD. It's in a class of its own.

Looks good!
LMAO. I really like aluminum for this. I also do not bother with extending the return line. I just cut the rubber hose in the middle of 180* bend and point it in the opposite direction of the 90* bend o put on the pickup tube.
Seeing how black my fuel filters are every 15,000 miles, I was thinking I would eliminate all rubber components inside the tank. I'm even curious as to what the float is made of. My sending unit went rouge for a while and I just used the trip odometer between fill-ups. But it hasn't lied to me in a while. I'm just doing pictures while dropping the tank, but a video on the H&H. What's the thoughts on eliminating all rubber components in the tank?

It is unlikely the Black has anything to do with your fuel system components.
There is only about an inch of rubber hose in the tank the way I do this mod.
