Yeah keep the built-in trans cooler. The heat exchange between oil and water is a lot better than oil-air. I bought a full aluminum off jegs that will supposedly fit (i'll find out this week I guess) but the usual suspects has them (LMC does, NPD and MAC probably do too).
I do plan to use an aux cooler too. From what i've read, the cooler the better for a transmission.
Yeah, run a 2nd external unit. Mine will be fanless, mounted in front of the radiator. It’s a pretty common setup.
I’m pretty sure I bought a champion radiator. I also bought an OE style shroud. I think it’s made by Dennis Carpenter and sold through the usual suspects. Looks to match my previous shroud perfectly, except mine is split in half and held together with zip ties and gasket maker.
I was on the fence about sticking with the stock fan, which will cool well but robs HP, or use a modern shroud with electric fans. I decided against the electric fans for now since that would require upgrading the electrical to support it, and I’d need to buy some pretty decent fans to deal with Mojave desert summers. There’s also the options to switch to a flex fan, or a clutch-operated fan. Either would reduce the amount of HP a standard fixed-fan uses but more research is needed so I’ll deal with it later.
Don't you just love the Mojave..im out there constantly..I'm definitely keeping my stock fan. I did find a shroud but since mine never had it when I got the rig all I can do is hope it fits. How do you plumb the external cooler? Run a T into the lines going to rad?
No, run it in-line. Hot from trans -> radiator cooler -> aux air cooler -> cold to trans. A T would probably not work as expected, and some sort of temp-actuated bypass connection isn’t worth the effort. I think Autorestomod did a video on this subject on YouTube.
To figure out which one is hot, run the truck for a few minutes and then feel the lines. Repeat until one is warm and the other is cold.
Mine had a/c at one point, but it was later removed. I think there are 1 or 2 kits out there that just include everything you need to add a/c. If you’re missing a decent amount of parts it might be easier to just start fresh. From what I’ve seen in parts catalogs, the stock a/c was an add-on kit anyways. I think autorestomod tackled this too, although he goes to great lengths to make things look good that no one will every really see.
Mines complete from what I see besides condenser. Under dash unit some random wires hanging down but think I can figure that out. But Definitely need condenser lol
Your talking keep built in transmission cooler and running additional external unit? Also let me know how the radiator works. Which one did u buy?
FYI i think there are two radiator supports. One is larger than the other, probably for towing or a/c models. Anyways, Champion lists the bigger one as CC480 and the smaller one as CC433. Make sure to measure your core size so you know which one to get.
Since I didn’t measure, I’m returning my CC480, and am buying the MC433 since it’s the only one in stock. The others are back-ordered for a bit.
I'm fairly certain mine is the big one...I measured the whole rad and not the core haha..plus I'm no where near the truck to measure it again until Christmas. But my rad measured 28in long..25.5in high...3in depth. But again that's whole rad not the core alone. I did find some on npd but kinda pricey however one of them was 1 row of cooling. Which I prefer vs 3 or 4 row.
And as far as my condenser goes for the ac I'm pretty much screwed..I looked briefly and all I could find was for a mustang...it might work haha
