The cable was nice and clean. It set me back about $30. A bit more than I wanted to pay, but I'm still very pleased with it.

The pic shows a greenish hue between the conductor and insulation, but that was some kind of thin fibrous layer. The conductor itself was fine.

I just worked some dielectric compound between the strands and inside the barrel of the new terminal. Two crimps and then covered in heat shrink. No solder, just like the factory terminal I cut off to shorten the cable...

The crimp mashes all the strands together and won't let the solder penetrate. Not sure that matters though, the solder will still tin anything exposed and help protect it from corrosion.
That is the whole point of soldering to seal the joint and stop any potential corrosion, I have and the board has seen piles of failed crimped on lugs, If you do not want to solder then the joint should be coated in something like NOALOX before crimping (it's exactly what they do in high voltage high tension barrel splices) avoid greases and non-conductive compounds in joints they do not enhance the conductivity of the joint and can actually be detrimental long term.

Yeah, the joke was aimed at me but must have been intended for someone else. I don't have 4/0 battery cables... yet. Although I guess I could just make some with what I have on hand that would work just fine. I have some 2/0 copper entrance wire. Got all the ends I'd need, if not I can make the ring terminal from some copper tubing. Like the look of the mil spec ones but maybe overkill for what I need. Anyone know the exact composition of the battery terminals? I'm sure it's lead and probably zinc and antimony, a nice range scrap blend might do just fine. Anyone try casting their own?

No, the alleged joke was aimed directly at you, lol. Your exact words from earlier:

And now I’ll literally spell it out. You insinuated I had selected a large cable to overcompensate for something small, nudge, nudge, wink, wink. And then I cranked up the humor to 11 by obliquely asking how your own overcompensation efforts were going.

You see, the funny part is I implied you had to overcompensate even more than what you had implied about me. And in a normal world, we’d all be laughing hysterically by now. In a dream world, you proceeded to laugh out your nose while eating Cheet-Os and drinking orange soda. A guy can dream, right?

Looks reasonably heavy duty. Been there awhile though too by the looks of the outer skin.
Not original of course, but a reasonable replacement without being too long. Or does more of it loop around out of view from the camera too?
