Speedo swap

I have a 1997 F-250 HD (obs) with 351W speed-density EFI. My son in law got me an instrument cluster with tach for Christmas. It is out of a 1992 Bronco... Can I do any mods between the two of them to get the tach to work in my '97??

Should be plug and play with no mods needed.

This depends on what you are going to swap. Are you swapping just the speedometer head or are you wanting to swap the entire instrument cluster?

If you want to swap the entire cluster, then there is wiring mods you to have to make because the differences in years for instrument clusters. '92-93, '94-95, '96-97 are all grouped together and there are mods needs for the wiring if you are trying to swap from '92 to '97 and vice versa.

Just swapping the speedometer itself is basic though.

Really want to use the cluster with tach, but it seems like it'll be a less than optimal swap. My current cluster is fine, just would like to have the tachometer.
Thanks for your response and help!!

Don't sweat it for the wiring issue, unless you aren't comfortable moving the wires.

Subford, a knowledgable member here, has the wiring schematics to swap the wires around.
Hopefully he'll chime in. He can, or another member perhaps can help with whether or not the '92 can swap into the '97 without any major conflicts. I know a '95 can swap into the '92 with a few wiring changes, just not sure about the '92 into the '97.

Thanks Timbersteel
Hopefully Subford will chime in. I'm comfortable with the wiring if I have schematics of the pin outs to reference while doing the changes.

One of the problems is that some electrical circuits that were part of the wiring harness off the board in the 1992-1995 clusters have been moved on to the PC board the 1996-1997 clusters.
The 1992 cluster also has a circuit for the Fuel reset and other cluster do not.
Also the alternator will not charge with the 1992 cluster in a 1997 truck without wire swapping.
There was something about the ABS with the 1996-1997 clusters.

The 1996 and the 1997 cluster are the same:

Thanks Subford. I was afraid that would be the case. I'll continue looking for a '96/'97 cluster. If I understand it correctly what I'm looking for is a cluster from '96/'97 F-250 or F-350 as the F-150 would be OBD2 and therefore not compatable. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is true you can not use one from a F150 & F250 with the OBD2.
You need one from a OBD1 truck.
