E Brake Cable Question

I'm replacing the e-brake cables on a 66 F-100. I purchased the Doorman parts from Speedway that were noted to be the correct application. They look slightly different.

The original cable appears to have a wire wrapping around the plastic sheath between the backing plate and where the balancer bar is located ahead of the rear axle. The doorman part appears to have some wrapping embedded within the plastic sheathing.

Has anyone used a similar part? Just wondering if they are correct.

Thanks

It’s an aftermarket part built more cheaply than the original. If the overall length is correct and the length on the inner side of the backing plate is the same, it should work fine. In my experience Dorman parts usually fit, but are not as robust as the originals. Just make sure it is routed so as not to rub since it doesn’t have the very tough outer metal wrap of the original.

So overall length needs to be the same, and the length between the rubber washer and end needs to be same. Then just route to avoid any rubbing....

Thanks!

Is your original cable broken or is the cable stuck within the housing? If it is the latter, coil it up and submerge it in a container of light weight oil. When I bought one of my trucks all the e-brake cables were frozen by rust - cable to housing. I submerged them in oil while I rebuilt engine, repaired rust, etc. Months later when I pulled them out of oil, they were unfrozen and worked fine.

Bought the truck a month ago. Upon taking off the drums, most of the spring were broken, lots of rust, etc.... I'm just replacing everything as a precaution... E-brake cables were relatively inexpensive and everything else going in is new, so I figured why not.....

Understood. If you have the storage room though, recommend keeping any of the original parts that can be rehabilitated as a backup

I just replaced all my e-brake cables too. I got 2 out 3 of the original cables to free up so far and plan to keep them as back ups. The originals seem to made better than the replacements.
