Have a 2000 7.3 diesel, manual. I am looking for a chip, looking at either the ts 6 position chip or the php hydra. I know each one has its benefits. To add another variable to the problem, I was researching the different programmers, IE swamps vs idp, which boils down to the hydra vs. the ts 6 position. A couple questions have come out since I was doing my research: will the reprogramming availability of the ts be around for a good while yet, or is it 8n the process.of being phased out? Are there any dangers of frying my ecu with the php if I go with one of the non swamps tunes? Any and all input or experiences are appreciated!
I went with a php hydra for my 99 7.3 for the benefit of being able to upload new tunes on the fly instead of shipping things out all the time. To me that was the selling point - plus the hydra seems to be one of the most recommended ones. There are no dangers of frying your ecu from applying a different tune to it. The only danger with any of these is with the install process - in particular with the php hydra where you're cleaning off the silicone from the contact pads. You can go too hard and ruin the contact pads. That's about it. No danger in frying anything.
Another vote for the Hydra here. Loading & switching tunes is super easy. Noticed a HUGE improvement over the Edge tuner that was used previously. Standard PHP tunes ran & shifted much smoother than edge.
I personally switched from edge to php hydra and difference was night and day. 'Same' hp tune from both - php hydra runs much smoother and better in every way - from how it idles to how the power is delivered. Would definitely recommend hydra. I am selling my edge tuner for very cheap in case you didn't feel like paying 300+ for a tuner.
PHP Hydra is the best tuning option on the market for the 7.3. If your going to tune your truck be sure to get boost, egt, and transmission temp gauges first.
Had a 6-position chip for years for my stock truck. I only had a one re-burn in the 5 years I used it and the truck ran off the PCM just fine since it was stock.
When I got new injectors I went with the Hydra. Pricier but I could get tunes e-mailed to me and I could load them in my driveway so there was no down time (the truck was my daily driver).
As 00Dave mentioned, check out the 99-03 7.3L forum. Lots of good threads on tuning to read and ponder. We're an easy going bunch so you can start your own thread too.
