I have a 2008 F150 Supercab 5.4 liter. One of my keys broke and I went to get a new one made. Two different places told me that it has a transponder in the head. The key is a black plastic head with Ford embossed on one side, but I'm pretty sure that it's just a regular key. Other vehicles that I've had that had a transponder in the key were much larger and had a way to change a battery in it.
I'm pretty sure this is a regular key, but I would like to verify.
They keys with batteries had a remote built in. The transponder doesn't require batteries. Yes, your key is a transponder key. I don't know about Ford but for my BMW they have to be special ordered and you have to prove you own the vehicle.
You can order spare keys on e-bay or get from Dealer... Any hardware store can cut the key by copy your original... Problem is it has to be PROGRAMED to the computer after that...... To do at home you need TWO KEYS to program the new key.. Even if one of the ORIGINALS is broken, your transponder might work to help program the new key... directions are in the manual... Or go to FORD and they will do it for you... for about $100.
Yeah, just like the chip in a pet, transponder keys don't use batteries.
I have had extra keys cut from transponder blanks off Ebay and let the vehicle program it.
Your owners manual details the procedure, or at least mine's did, you need two programmed keys to do it.
I use the spares mostly, keep my OEMs for whatever I drive like new on separate rings in other pocket.
Never tried to make duplicates from broken transponder keys, but I have tried a plain key with no transponder and
while the key will turn the lock, no start until I lay a transponder key for that vehicle on top of the steering column.
Maybe laying a broken transponder key up there while reprogramming a new key will work?

Thanks for all of the feedback. I really appreciate it.
I did some searching and found OEM replacement keys sold by Ford on Amazon. A little more pricey than some of the other replacement keys, but I feel better at spending the money on them than taking a chance on a generic key. I read over the instructions in the owner's manual. It's disappointing that I have to have two spare keys, but I'll see what I can do with what I have, or take it to my dealer and have them program it. I'm not happy that I have to spend this much money on a spare key, especially on a truck that is this old.
Maybe you can get a non-transponder key cut to fit your ignition switch and just break the transponder off your broken original key and super glue the transponder portion to you new non-transponder key?
Better make sure that you can find a key shop that will cut your new key. I’ve heard that Some now refuse to cut some keys as it messes up their key cutting machine.
My local Ford dealer ship cut a new transponder key then programmed it for $100. Ouch, but beats maybe security locking out your truck if your Amazon stuff does not work. You might get a local lock smith to cut a hid a spare that will at least un lock the truck doors. Wally World and Ace Hardware will NOT cut a spare to just unlock.
