Has anyone ever encountered the issue in the linked video?
I have a 2012 F250 6.7 diesel that randomly will not start when I crank the ignition but rather makes this weird electronic whining sound. It usually starts after doing this once or twice and then does not have any issues at all for 1 to 2 weeks before it does it again. Thanks for the help. Won't Start
The dealer checked the starter, the starter wires, tested both batteries, and checked all other connections. It's not an on-demand reproducible issue and I'm afraid it may leave me stranded one day when it won't start up like it usually does.
Once it starts, everything runs beautifully without issue for a week to two weeks. at a time It's very strange.
Sounds to me that the starter is just spinning, the bendix isn't kicking forward to engage the flywheel. When it happens again, have someone under the truck, with a small hammer and when you turn your key, have them tap the starter, I bet it'll engage. Have the starter rebuilt or replaced.

I'm leaning toward the starter as well. I brought it to the dealer and they gave me an $800 quote on replacing the starter with no guarantee that replacing it will resolve the issue.
I'm hoping someone here will say, yes, I had the exact same problem and this is the solution.
We'll see. For now, I'm going to wait and see. Thanks.

That seems awfully expensive, even for the dealer. You can buy brand new Motorcraft from Rockauto for under $350.00 and that's including core charge. You can buy them rebuilt as low as $100.00, I think I'd shop around for a good shop if you're not able to change it yourself.

I agree. They want to charge me $400 for the starter and $400 for labor. Thanks.
Thus the word stealership was invented. 800 for a starter...they should be jailed. Everything's 1000 dollars today...GAH!
If you have a good local starter/alternator/auto electric rebuild shop bring it there. They will bench test it and rebuild it. I would certainly bench test it before blindly replacing it.
They are not tough to rebuild as long as the stator and armature are good. Requires intermediate skill level, tools, and attention to detail.
Or do the rockauto thing. Just steer clear of offshore junk. Clean all starter cable connections both ends. Then spray terminal protectant on all of those points.
