Hey guys, got a couple of questions regarding shift points for the 4r100.
1. What's the best shift points for something like a daily driver tune?
2. What rpm do you shift at when not towing? (ZF6 guys can chime in on this one)
Reason I ask is because I have tried quite a few custom tuners, and none of them can seem to get the shifting right. I have an early 99 with the XLE4 pcm, and a slightly beefed up transmission from a local builder.
One tuner gets through the gears quickly which I like, but the shifts are a bit too harsh for my liking.
Another tuner holds each gear longer, but the shifts are still a bit firm for my liking, and the shift points aren't always consistent.
The canned PHP tunes shift pretty well, but the torque converter won't lock up in 3rd gear in any tune, and the injector noise is ridiculously loud.
I scheduled an appointment with my trans builder to adjust some things, but just wanted to get some input from you guys as to what's a good shift strategy that will keep the engine in the sweet spot, and also not lug the crap out of it.
ZF6 - 2000 to 2500 unless I am going up a grade and need to upshift, then I will bump the shift point closer to 2800. This is with my 5th wheel in tow.
"Best" shift point depends on how you want to drive the truck. Low RPM is good for smooth stately progress to the local burger joint and good MPGs, Higher is better for power and towing. Smooth vs harsh is a different discussion, depends on trans internals and tune. A good tuner can smooth it out if they know the trans internals.
I like the race tune on my DP5, the trans shifts up or down at 50mph. So you get more RPM in 2nd while accelerating and decel from engaging 2nd when slowing down. More how I'd drive it as a stick than the Daily Driver shift points.
Ditto what @aawlberninf350 said about DP's shift points. They seem to be spot on for me as long as I choose the correct tune for the type of driving anticipated.
So the tune that I mainly drive on gets through the gears pretty quickly, and doesn't shift into overdrive until 48mph which I like more than the stock shifting that would go into overdrive at like 40 mph. This tune will hold overdrive until 40mph though which leads to my next question...When just putting around empty, is it ok to lug the motor at like 1100-1200 rpms? Or should I just cut overdrive off to avoid lugging it? When I tow or haul, I avoid lugging at all cost, and my tow tune helps with that.
