I figured a ballpoint pen spring might be about right, and yepper it works perfect. Crisis averted. Now I'm going to look through the shop manual a little more carefully and see if I can find a section on that. Seems weird they kind of gloss over the entire column shift mechanism in the transmission section.
I used 80/90 hypoid gear oil in the toploader for a long time. Drained all that out and re-filled with Redline MT-90, supposed to be GL-4 and safe for synchros and better shift. Gotta say it does seem to shift a lot better. It oughtta, the stuff is $17 a quart! Jeeze Louise. Hypoid gear oil is a little too slippery maybe.
I went through the '64 shop manual, near as I can tell, there is absolutely nothing on disassembling the column shifter mechanism. There is a single paragraph and diagram on making sure everything is lined up, but that's about it, goes straight into removal of the transmission. Guess Ford decided you're on your own for that nutroll.
Ok. Looking at my '64, it isn't a roll pin, two "buttons" that I figured when both depressed simultaneously, would allow removal of the shifter. I was right, though... I think there is a also a spring between them.
Or "was", cuz I can't find it now. Oops! The innards look pretty good though. I'll shoot some white Lithium grease in thar and see if I can't find a spring. I looked through the Shop Manual, not real hard but there doesn't seem to be any discussion on disassembly of the shifter column. Gotta be in there somewhere.. I cannibalized a ballpoint pen spring, works perfect for the purpose.
LOL, good catch, the ballpoint pen spring. If you decide to disassemble the column, you'll find it's pretty cut and dried. I like to take photos of each step to see FOR SURE how it's to go back together. At least the first time.
Thank you for this thread. my column shifter was having trouble in the 1-2 shift. I was dreading taking the column out. Took the level off instead and lubed as described in this thread. Shifting is so much nicer now!
