I have a 1961 Ford F100 Unibody Custom Cab 292 with a 3-speed. How does the shifter lever that goes throught the shift collar attach to the shifter tube? My original shop manual really does not give a break down.
The shift tube fits inside the steering column mast jacket (outer shroud). The steering shaft fits inside the shift tube.
The shift tube has a round hole in it where the end of the shift lever fits into. The hole is surrounded by a "sweated on" rectangular reinforcement.
What happens: The reinforcement falls off, down to the bottom of the inside of the column, the shift lever then begins to elongate the hole in the tube.
Sooner or later, either the reinforcement has to be reattached to the tube, or if MIA, the tube has to be replaced because the reinforcement was not available by itself.
The 1957/63 Ford Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD from hipoparts.com / Illustration Section 70.3: All the steering column parts are shown in an exploded view.
