E40D to 4R100

So my truck when I bought it had no reverse. So I bought a 1996 f350 parts truck and put that trans in mine. I now decided to run the numbers on it coming to find out the trans I put in is a 1998 4R100. Silly me. But it’s been working great so far. Only problem is when I tow my over drive light will come on flashing. Not sure if it’s because I need to tow with overdrive off or what. But I was wondering if the sensor on top of the 4R100 would be causing my overdrive light flashing problem. (Because there’s nothing to plug it into). If someone would care to fill me in on the differences between the trans or what that sensor does or how to bypass it or make it work.

A 1998 4R100 is essentially an E4OD with an extra sensor and some stronger internals.

The light doesn't flash because you need to tow with overdrive off. You do NOT need to tow with overdrive off. It was designed to tow in overdrive.

The light isn't flashing because you don't have the extra sensor plugged in. The computer doesn't have any idea that the extra sensor even exists.

It flashes because something is wrong. That's about as specific as I can get without knowing what codes are stored in the computer. You can use Forscan to read the codes, or a good independent shop, or a Ford dealer.

thanks mark for the response. The trans works great until I hook up and plug in the trailer then it trips. Otherwise it doesn’t come on at all. Could it be poor trailer wiring?

It could be a lot of things. If I knew the codes I could help direct what's wrong. Without the codes all I can tell you is that something is wrong.
