I have a 1999.5 Ford F350 with a 7.3 PSD. Been having several issues but I want to focus on This issue: I can crank to start initially from cold. Takes about 5-6 seconds to fire off. Once the operating temperature is reached and I turn it off it will not restart. Injection pressure will not reach 500 psi to fire the injectors. But like I said, once it cools down it will restart. I check the level of oil in the hpop reservoir and it’s about 2 1/2 inches low overnight. Low oil pump pressure once heated up at Idle is 29 psi. Within the last 60 days a new high-pressure oil pump has been installed as well as an IPR, IPC and CPS. And new inline fuel pump. IPR duty cycle right at 80% during no start cranking. No oil leaking onto ground.
I’ve been told I have O-rings leaking on the injectors. Anyone with solid experience on these 7.3’s regarding O-ring leaks have any comments for me I’m all ears.
Yeah... injector O-rings. Easy test: I call it the Cody test, but it's officially a high pressure oil leak test or something like that - but it hurts my brain and fingers to remember and type all of those words.
Yep, sounds like o-rings to me too. When the oil gets hot it thins out enough so that enough of it is getting past the o-rings before it can build the pressure up enough.
I appreciate all the insight. I plan on using this truck to pull a fifth wheel more and more so… I’m planning on just changing all of the O-rings in these injectors anyway. So do you think it not wise to do so without doing the Carl test/air pressure test? Also, should I do anything in the way of testing these injectors before I change the O-rings and put them back? I’ve been told I need a whole new set of injectors by one gentleman, and then another mechanic tells me why would you replace all of your injectors if they’re working fine. What’s the rule of thought here?.
How many miles are on the injectors? Do you have any other issues that could be related to the injectors that we should know about?
You could do a buzz test if you still have the AIH or the delete mod wire. I am not sure if buzz test works with the delete wire though.
If the trucks runs well when warm, then I would suspect an o-ring kit would resolve your issues for a fraction of the cost of injectors. Injectors can last anywhere from 100,000 miles to 500,000 miles depending on the vehicles use and maintenance.
Miles on truck/ history / and clattering noise from injectors
When I purchased the truck 3 1/2 years ago it had 219,000 miles on it and currently 254,790. I was not able to get any information about the maintenance/history of the truck When i bought it. It was an oil field fleet truck of some type. I have used it to pull a single car hauler and here of late I have pulled a 13,000 pound fifth wheel approximately 4000 miles worth. I’m not having any power issues other than those we’re discussing here.
INJECTOR CLATTER
A condition I noticed between applying accelerator and releasing the accelerator is a louder injector clattering.
