Updated/fixed...Stock boost psi?

Hey guys. I’m sure this has been discussed til beaten to death, but I’m on the road now (stopped fueling at moment) and even hauling a few thousand pounds behind going up hills when I floor it I only get to 13 PSI. I have a edge CTS2 monitor. Everything is stock set up, no chip. It will hold at 12 or 13 psi but never gets more. Is there a chance I have a leak or is this just as much as I should expect?
Also what is the best way to check for boot leaks, exhaust leaks etc.? What all should I check?

15 is about max stock, so you are right there.

Defueling occurs around 22-23 psi, before I installed the OCR I would see 22-23 on a stock Tune then it would defuel. After the OCR, I would see 25-26 psi with a modified stock turbo. If you’re only seeing 13 psi it’s time to check for leaks.

For exhaust leaks, look for soot on the pipes at the joints between up-pipe and exhaust manifold, head and exhaust manifold, and between up-pipe and collector behind the turbo.

I have the stock turbo based on torque pro and forscan I get 19.3psi wot up an onramp

I would start with torquing all the boot clamps to 60in/lbs except for the manifold boots, I believe those are 50in/lbs. Can also build a boost leak detector for about $8

^^^ what he said. Here is one example of a boost leak detector. Regulate the pressure you apply to 10-20psi:

Some folks apply the cap to the pipe directly connected to the turbo inlet, avoiding leakdown through the CCV.

A fully stock truck (when new) reached about 17-18 PSI max. Over the years, that number has spread a bit because of the age of the components under the hood. The engine is capable of significantly more boost if the turbo system is unleashed, but other components interfere with the quest for air soon after.

Step 1: Look up "7-turn" mod and perform that.
Step 2: Search "Red line" mod and do that.

At that point, you might barely reach 22-23 PSI boost if your air in/out has no leaks and the turbo is in working order - but the stock program will defuel at that pressure when you cross 2800 RPM.

Don't forget to look for soot under the hood (which NEVER belongs there), and exhaust leak can take you down just as quick as a boost leak.

I’ll definitely be headed to hardware store to make a leak detector. Thanks.

I looked pretty hard yesterday but engine was super hot and they’re definitely is not on the hood anywhere. Engine is real clean so hopefully will help.. Curious about the boots and the pipes for sure.

Ok..that observation made me smile, Brian.

I don't think @Tugly meant soot on the hood itself, but that would sure indicate a helluva leak.

I had forgotten about the 2 mods Tugly mentioned. I think you'll like the results of those, once implemented.

Ha. ☺️. That actuator sounds like it may be a bugger to get too. Sounds like I definitely need to keep some extra clips around. Definitely got to do it but got to make sure there’s no leaks first. First things first, right. I’ve been saving up for a chip too. Been spending all my money on other “must do items” on the truck every time I save up. Hope to one day get ahead. Got fuel tank mods and filter in there too....
just made a 1500 mile round trip. Went well, but got REAL lucky. I was going slow speed on some gravel and heard some clicking noises got out and one of my mile marker hubs was almost falling off! 4, yes FOUR, of the screws had come out of one of the hubs and it was about to fall off. Luckily I was able to take two from the other side and screw these back in and we’re good to go for a while. I wish they would’ve included blue Loctite in the instructions. Ugh

I’m guessing that you nailed it. Got the stuff together for a boost leak detector but while crawling around underneath found this.

pardon my ignorance, but how do you fix this?

From preventative maintenance standpoint what else needs to be done while all that is out? Any gaskets, o rings, on any of the parts that would suggest replacing, etc?
