I am no longer concerned with an oil consumption problem. After going to the dealership in the test and needing a qt right at the 3000 mile and not qualifying I added the qt and the wife and I traveled 1300 with no oil use. I now drive the truck harder than I one did. We went over a few 7000 foot passes and I used the trans gear controller a lot and have begun to like the 10 speed. I always warm up the truck for about 5 minutes now and used tow/haul or sport mode for the first 5-10 miles until the trans is warm. We got 22 mpg on the trip.

I still have a oil separator and find oil in it when checked at 1000 miles. I just pour the small amount back in the crankcase. Good luck to all 2018-up 5.0's...Drive it like you stole it.

Interesting… I wonder if your habit of warming the engine up has anything to do with this. Perhaps running that long without putting the engine under load prevented the rings from sealing properly during break in?

I did a lot of reading on this subject about 10 years ago, and concluded that warming and engine up before driving does more harm than good. Of all the engines I've broken in, none have ever burned oil. Just a thought, I think you're correct in not worrying about it. As long as you keep oil in the crankcase, the engine will likely last forever like that. If consumption increases significantly I would worry about your catalytic converters, though.

My first mill was broken in easy. Easy driving, remote starts on cold days, or idling sucked oil. Drive loaded 850 miles fighting a 45mph headwind? Nothing. Zero to minimal.
Replacement mill drive it like I stole it to break it in. Minimal use. Try to drive it easy to get 20 mpg instead of 16mpg, it sucked oil.

I don't know if you're right on this, but I've never had an "oil burner" so to speak. My habit for the last many years is to start it up, and wait for the fast idle to slow down, then just drive. So you may not be far off reality.

Isn't there an issue with rings getting hardened after they've been heat cycled enough times?

I choose to warm it up because of the trans. It probably is not over 2-3 minutes. I use the remote start and because I have an Edge monitor I can see what the engine temp is. 120 when I start driving is ok but 140 seems to be better. Everyone including me knows these 10 speed skip around and are "slushy" when dead cold. A short warm up makes all the difference in the world to me.. Good luck.

There are a lot of variables that could lead to oil burning, I had a 76 Mustang 302 that used 1 qt. every 1300 - 1500 miles. I got it with 13,000 miles on it and ran it to 90,000 always the same oil use. The last 30 years, I've been spoiled I haven't had anything use enough to notice.

Congrats on the new truck!

Don't they call diesels "oil burners"?

LOL sorry couldn't resist.

The other one sounded like it was just a matter of time until it had the next issue, possibly with oil consumption again.

I'm looking forward to hearing of your experience with this one. These are pretty rare so far.

Thanks Cathedral. I saw very few before I bought this one, and not one since I got mine. Goofy looks from Super Duty drivers are priceless.

New engine

Been following this forum since I bought my used 2018 with the 5.0. Started checking oil consumption. Sure thing it was using oil. Original selling dealer performed the consumption test and it’s now in the shop getting a new engine. Service manager informed me that the first week of November 2019 Ford is no longer replacing the engine. The “fix” is now a computer “re program”

Glad I got mine in

So are you saying that your truck has been down and in the shop since early to late October getting it’s engine replaced?

No. I drove it while the engine new engine was ordered and being shipped in. That process took three weeks. Waited just only another week for them to get a loaner. They called for the truck on 11/20/19. I dropped it off on Thursday 11/21/19. They advised that it should be ready today Monday 11/25/19. Their engine tech worked on it on Saturday. Their shop is one of the best at customer service I’ve come across in years

Dealer called today and said my truck was ready. Picked it up and ran like its supposed to.
Looks like it was a Kansas City factory install. They started on it last Thursday. Done today Monday two and a half total shop days. They worked on it on Saturday. Great dealer.

It took one day for one guy when my POS was replaced. The cab was not removed. I about fell over when they called and said it was ready. Other than the HPFP sheared off a few days later, I’d have never known it was a replacement. These new trucks are about plug and play.

Awesome.

Glad to hear that you got it back before the holiday.

Let us know how it’s working for you and if you have any excessive oil consumption after you’ve driven it for awhile.
