If it was my truck I would do a UOA at 3k before adding any make up oil. Have it tested for fuel dilution and TBN, this will give you a baseline. If you are running MC 5w30 I will say slight oil consumption is fairly common. The oil does have almost a 13% NOACK, which tends to increase oil consumption especially in DI engines with fuel dilution. Ford should consider going to a more stringent spec on their next oil revision and go towards A3. To test your own sanity you can always use a ACEA rated oil and then check oil consumption. There is a few easy to get options. One of the most robust oils that is extremely resistant to burn off and oil vaporization is the Valvoline SynPower 5w30 MST ( Its also ACEA 3, BMW LL and Dexos 2 rated).

If it's SN then max Noack is 15%
if it's Dexos1 max Noack is 13%
if it's A3/B4 and MB 229.5 then max Noack is 10%

so..... can we run 5w-30 while under warranty? That's always been my question. Seems like that would slow the oil usage.

If I had a 5.0, I would be running a full synthetic 5w30, SN plus oil. If there was no loss of oil between changes, I would do a 7,500 mile OCI. If there was loss, I would check the MSDS on several oils until I found one with the lowest volatility. When I used to use Mobil1 in Ford Triton engines, I would lose a quart every 5k miles. I switched to Pennzoil Platinum at lost no more oil.

I know Ford recommends 5w20 semi synthetic. I just don’t think I could do that with these plasma lined cylinders. Maybe a 5w20 or 0w20 full synthetic in the winter up north, but that’s it. I know Ford doesn’t recommend a different oil (in North America anyway), but that’s a chance I would be willing to take.

I've run 5w20 full synthetic sn plus gl-5 in mine after the first dealer change. Its time for another change I am at 31% and going to change it this weekend.
It does not fall under the 1 quart in 3000 but it uses more than I am used to. If there is a consensus on what to try this time, I can take what I bought back and try it. I just want to make sure I keep the warranty.

I suspect oil can play a major part in this Both the original mill and this current replacement BOTH ran/run 1,200 +/- miles or so before they use any oil. Then it drops fairly steadily.

Here is some reading and study done on the MC 5w20 SN and it does indicate the SN version of 5w20 does evaporate more than some oils and more than previous SM version.

Two things stand out in that post that I personally have thought:
more consumption on long hot high speed Interstate runs and the consumption usually begins around the 2500 mile mark.
On my daily commute, it seems to burn very little, but on extended trips like vacation last week and mileage over 2000 it seems to consume more. I always figured the oil was breaking down with use.

a dumb question, when it evaporates, does that mean taken up in the PCV and burned?

Interesting. Mine burns it on easy driving. I physically watched puffs of smoke in my side view mirror during stop and go construction traffic on the interstate. During the high speed driving into a headwind that required both hands on the wheel from Memphis to Chicago, it barely burned any oil at all.

Sounds more like valve guide seals are the problem.

The oil consumption at low RPM would imply that it may be induction vacuum related. That "could" be valve guides. Maybe they didn't put in a long block, but stuck in a short block and moved the valves from the old one to the new one. Just spitballing here. I don't really know.

Yeah I think that would be weird too, but that's what it sounds like.

That being the case, maybe they did swap the short block and keep the heads. Maybe the short block was incorrectly condemned and it was really valve guide seals.

Maybe.

I'm speculating too.

Since this 5.0 engine is getting slammed and people are down on it (for some legitimate reasons for sure) I figured I'd give an objective update on mine. The truck was a special order arriving in mid January this year.

After 2800 miles I took it to the dealer since the oil level was registering below the cross hatches and bottom punch-out of the dip stick. After reading posts here on the forum I was a bit disappointed that I might have a drinker on my hands. They changed the oil and used X0-5W20-BSP (9 qts). I have approximately 5200 on it now and it hasn't gone down one bit since the change. Kinda hoping it was just the break-in and now I'm good to go with a great 5.0. Love it so far, plenty of power, excellent mileage (22+ highway & a little town), loving the sound. I'll post as my mileage goes up.

So, what’s BSP??? Bulk oil? I broke this second mill in totally opposite of the first, and the results are still similar. Unless I change to a non-synthetic, or bump it to a 5W-30, I doubt I’ll see much difference. Not sure which way to go.

I have no clue. Blended Synthetic something or other? Just happy I'm not consuming any yet.
