I have a 1973 F350 Camper Special with a 390 that I put two new starters in and each never turned over but shorts out as soon as battery is connected.
Both were tested and worked before installed. Thinking a sort to ground on the accessory wires may be the issue. Notice I had 12 VDC on both lugs (battery & starter).
Tried two differnt solenoids. Have anyone ever seen a starter fail like this? No click, never tried to turn over.
If you have power at both terminals yes it will spark when the battery cable is connected. You need to figure out why the solenoid has power without cranking. Are you sure you have the small wire on the correct terminal?
