Needed to pull trans to fix leak from pump seal and while under truck noticed freeze plugs leaking. So I pulled motor this stuff always snowballs. Motor needs freeze plugs, motor mounts, flex plate cracked and valve stem seals. Looks like intake is leaking oil on back of engine so will have to fix that too.
Motor started off as replacement of freeze plugs and ended in a stripped block. Intake was leaking oil, oil pan was leaking oil. Pulled timing cover, chain was very loose. Pulled main cap bearings are in bad shape so it has turned into a overhaul. Good news is it is a stock 360 and clean inside. Will get heads checked out and valve stems seals replaced.
Be sure to pay attention to head gasket placement, blocked passage up front, open in the rear, so one of the gaskets is upside down although they are correct.....
Got my cylinder heads back from the machine shop and installed on the motor. Resurfaced, valve job and new guides. Also purchased new cam, intake and carb. Sandblasted the value covers and exhaust manifolds.
Lookin good man, I like that you kept the stock exhaust manifolds, knowing what I know now I would have found some and installed when I had my motor out, headers are great and all, but for what my truck actually is the headers make everything more difficult to access, freeze plugs, transmission, starter, the list goes on, but they sound great ! Also curious did you rebuild the C-6 ? and did your block have the turkey pan in it and did it go back in ? Also your breather and PCV valve does it make a difference which valve cover gets what ? mine was routed opposite of yours when I bought my truck so I rebuilt it the same way....
I just replaced the pump seal and pulled pan and replace filter. Trans shifted fine and pan was clean, I have learned to stick with what works. Yes the pan is still under intake manifold. I moved the grommet to other valve cover for PCV. Valve covers are identical, old carb had vacuum port on back. New carb had port on front, I don’t see why it would make a difference? This all started as a leaking pump seal and has snow balled ever sense. Exhaust manifolds are the way to go I have headers on other trucks not worth the hassle.
It runs started it this morning and broke in camshaft five minutes running and it started over heating. Still had air in motor took off heater hose to bleed air out of system. Second try everything went good, so far everything is looking good. Holds good oil pressure and runs good hopefully it will stay that way. Trans also shifts good and no leaks so far.
