E4OD transmission
I just bought the truck for a project. It has transmission problems. The previous owners "mechanic" told me it had a bad transmission and transfer case, and would only move in reverse. The truck has been sitting for at least 5 years.
I put some jumper cables on it and started the truck. In OD it makes clunking grinding noise. In 1&2 it drives, and will move in reverse. I drove it about 5 miles in second gear with no problems to my house.
So you transmission gurus, short of replacing the transmission, is there anything to check before I pull it? I'm fairly confident there is nothing wrong with the transfer case since it drives in reverse, first and second gear.

If you have a scanner I would check for codes and even better if it had data stream you could see if the computer is even commanding the shifts, if it is I would pull the pan and check for debris.

Will it shift to 2nd on its own or are you manually moving the shifter into 2nd to get 2nd gear? Maybe it's just not changing gears so it could be something like a speed sensor or a range sensor.

If you unplug the transmission it should be in 4th gear, maybe throw it up on some jack stands and see if you can get what you think 4th gear is to know if the transmission is capable of 4th.

Thanks James
I won't have a chance to work on it till the weekend. It would be cool if it was something stupid causing the problem, but I'm not holding my breath.
I do have an engine code scanner, will that do it? The battery was completely dead so I'm fairly sure any codes stored were erased. Something about 5 plus years/dead battery/30* below zero ruins batteries. It will get a new battery when I work on it so maybe it will store some codes when I get the scanner of have someone with a better scanner hook up to it.
A friend I took with me to get the truck drove it home so I didn't actually drive it. I cant say if it will shift from first to second.
I'll try unplugging the transmission and see what happens.
Thanks again for the pointers.

Low voltage, shorted batteries, bad grounds or just a poor performing charging system can cause a electrically controlled transmission to work erratic if even at all. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about the transmission before you know the engine performance and electrical system is working like it should.

Not sure if your scanner is capable of transmission information or not, most cheap handhelds will not communicate with the transmission systems especially on Fords.

Forscan for Winderz is still Free, ya just need an ELM327 adapter... if you look at clone adapters be sure they are fully ELM327 pass thru compatible.

Friday I was able to install a new battery and drove a few miles. Today I drove the truck about 10 miles down the highway and found...
It will start out with the shifter in 1st or 2nd. Starting in 2nd it shifts from 1st to 2nd as it should. As soon as I get it rolling in either gear I can shift to OD and the transmission shifts to 3rd and overdrive at what seems to be about the right speeds.. No noise or hesitation, as far as I can tell all 4 gears and reverse work as long as I don't start out with the shifter in the OD position. I can disable the overdrive with the button on the shifter and it shifts down to 3rd gear. I have not unplugged the transmission or cleaned connections yet. I also cleaned about 50 LBS of dirt and crud from the cab. Another 10 LBS and it will be fairly presentable.

I know of some electrical issues. So far I've found the turn signals don't work with regularity. Once in a wile they will, but most of the time no go. The fuel gauges won't work in either tank. I tried filling both tanks and I believe they are both full.

Judging from this information what should I look at next? Thanks in advance for any help.

Update time.
Today I was able to work on the truck a bit more. I put the truck up on jack stands and was able to do a bit more testing. It will start out in OD but there is some clunking noise. If I start out in 1st there is no noise, shift to 2nd still no noise, shift to OD minor noise but it shifts to 3rd and 4th gear. Earlier I thought starting with the shifter in 2nd it started in first and shifted, but I don't think so now. It seems to start out in second gear. I un-plugged the transmission and it appears to fail to overdrive as it sounds like it should, but I get the clunking noise when it does, but possibly to a lesser extent than with the transmission plugged in. The plug was clean and oil/corrosion free. I plugged it back in and took it for a drive with no change/improvement than before I started.

My scanner is for vehicles with OBD2. It appears that my 1995 is not OBD2 compliant and it won't connect to the port in the truck. Is there an adaptor or is it a completely different system?

Can someone explain Forscan? What do I need to use it? Laptop? Smart phone?

my bad for mentioning Forscan as it is for OBDII

I don't know WTF I was thinking at the time ??? maybe I just saw your 06 F250

I use the old SnapON MT2500 to read ECCIV, it will also read codes from the Transmission PCM on the diesels too.

Forscan runs on Winderz just as I explained in my OP.... there is a number of different Passthru ELM327 connectors that it will work with even some BlueTooth Versions..... I use an older USB ELM327 that I built myself, schematics are freely available on the Web.

Just go here and learn all ya want https://forscan.org/home.html

I used this ELM apapter: ELM327 Adapter Having gone through a few of the less expensive versions, each one returned I decided going better was my best route. The issues I had might have been related to my laptop and running Win7 but from the first connection to this one it worked flawlessly. Now the only failing of FORScan is ME!

I use winderz 7 Ultimate, never had an issue with the adapter I built, but I did need to do a modification to my adapter I added a switch to it for MSCAN

Oh and BTW I use an Antique Dell 1525 inspiron lappy, that was never intended to be using Win 7 in the first place

for anyone interested in the mod it was posted here... https://topscantool.com/modify-mscan...g-forscan.html

BUT for sure if you are not into building your own electronics projects and you want trouble free then pay the extra money and get what is recommended because it has been tested to function with Forscan

Got the truck fixed today. I spent a lot of time tracing wiring and checking for grounded wires. All checked out good. Checked for bad plugs at the transmission and ECM and they looked good.
I ended up buying a used transmission from a wrecking yard for $350. It had 160 K miles on it, with a 90 day warranty. I figured if it lasts 90 days it would likely last a few years. I spent a couple days pulling the transmission from my truck, and my son came yesterday and helped me install the new (used) transmission. The pan was mashed a bit so I pulled the good pan from my old transmission to install on the new one. I should have pulled the pan on the old one from the start and it would have saved me quite a bit of time. It was full of chunks of clutch and steel material. It also had what looked like pieces of key stock about half an inch long and 1/8" square. They weren't sticking to the magnet so I don't know what they were. The fluid was dark but not burned.

The truck now drives nice without noise like before. Shifts through all gears like it should and I can actually start out in drive now.
