I have a 1990 f250 with a e4od 4x4. Ever since i bought the truck 4 years ago its always had a harsh/delayed 2nd to 3rd shift. I have replaced the fluid and filter, mlps sensor. The truck never pulls any codes. I have even checked in side the ecu, but everything looks fine. I did realize that if i leave the battery unhooked for a while then hook it back up and take it for a drive, it wont have a harsh shift. After a few miles, then it will come back. Any thoughts?
If its smooth after a battery disconnect, it definitely makes me think you have an electronics/computer issue somewhere. Does your check engine light work?
I agree with electical issue. And yes check engine light works. I did notice i have a small amount of bare wire showing just above the selonoid connector on the trans. Could that make it shift harsh but not after disconnecting the battery?
It's possible it may be upsetting the computer. Solenoid pack harness connector failure is pretty common on these trucks. Best fix is to get a new connector and splice it in.
